Double Bass Smokey Joe on BSO's, Redux

Around and around we go. The reasons for not starting with junk have been detailed here in these recent threads and many times before. Staring at "the bottom" for a new bass means $1200-$1500. "Dedicated" players need not ever spend $20k to have wonderful instruments with which they can achieve success.

My point sir is how the thread was getting off topic. Suggesting one save their pennies to achieve success tomorrow isn't helping him with his problem today.
He doesn't have the money for an expensive bass or the cost of a repairman. So, he came here. I've worked on many bass and suggested narrowing down the problem to string tension, tuners and the Iowa climate. I don't care how much he paid for it because most basses are repairable.

Pretty much agree with you. Guys here did offer good information about the problem. Part of that was that it may not be worth pouring money into the thing depending on what's wrong with it. CCBs with big problems can't always be repaired without spending more than the thing's worth and because they're built so badly... but no harm in having luthier look at it to see if that's true for this one. Bunch of other posts serve as usual noob warnings.

I usually stay away from this flamin' threads , but honestly Mr. Smokey Joe, you are not doing a good job in here, the reason like we avoid this instruments like the plague, like many of others well said is that you have great chances of having a non playable instrument that will only give you trouble down the road and will make you spend lots of money in repairs, and even if you will spend a lot of money, you will never get it back, because these basses dont have a re sale value.
so, if we can save some novice trouble, i think we are doing a good service, i have seen many people who quit Double Bass simply because they couldnt play this POS basses, they were unplayable and so the novices got frustrated and move along to other instrument or just quit at all. when i started playing bass there was no internet and i got cheap bass for that time, fortunately it was a Czech made bass that got me going without major problems for the 1st years until i upgrade to something better. i really wonder why you cant understand this...

Listen carefully. I am only going to say this once. If you spend $2000 on a bass you may be looking at resale value. If you buy a bass for $500 you can give it away to some kid that would be tickled to death or burn it when youre done with it. Its like buying a 5 inch tv. These are throw away items, but they give you a chance to see what upright bass is about. You don't evidently use one to just play around the house. Thats what I'm doing ,trying to get familiar enough to play someone elses bass if asked or invited to. That happened to me before but I refused because it had been too long since I played one. I have played EB for years. But if it means $500 bass or no bass at all why not? Have no problems except the strings are crappy, probably a $40 set. Get what you pay for

Or you could be spending all your time getting it fixed up due to inherent problems and never getting to play it, as it is sitting in a shop or in an unusable condition...

THen I'm not alone? I keep hearing how these are too hard to play. A piece of cake. Try playing a flattop, it makes the bass easy as falling off a log.

No No No. I'm talking about something to practice around the house. I practice with CDs. Theyre not meant to be a WORK bass. Nothing wrong to learn on one. But I'm not one to tell someone what they need to buy. I'll leave that to you all.

Bass, I've been playing in night clubs (and many other venues, too including concert halls) my whole life and am as serious about music and playing the bass as any orchestra musician. I'm sure many others here feel the same way.

That's rarely actually the case. It's more like no bass for now.

Often you don't. In the long run, a CCB has the potential to give you far less than for what you paid.
