Smoking and the bass

I don't know how things go across the pond, but over here it makes sense nearly everybody goes outside to smoke, isn't that the solution?

When YOU sit there and watch a family member die of double lung cancer (from cigarettes), you too my become an "anti-smoking nazi".

Seriously though in addition to discoleration and stink, the film from smoking gets on everything, that is what causes the discoleration and stink. Over time with a heavy smoker you may feel that effect on the freboard and what not. Oddly on the metal I would wager it might prevent oxidation though.

To get odor out of cases you can get hand sanitizer in a spray at most drugstores. Evaporates pretty quickly, doesn't have the perfumey smell like febreze. Works on everything, shoes, clothes, etc. I keep some with me on the road for when laundry days are far apart.
Before smoking was banned locally in bars, my nice vintage tweed Precision case soaked up tobacco smoke like a sponge. I'd load it in my car after a gig and it'd smell like an ashtray for a couple of days. The VFWs had smoke eaters -- I guess they were old enough to have watched friends die from emphysema. Now smoking is no longer allowed at most places (a couple of bars outside the city limits are not affected) and I can pick and choose what smell I want to wear on any given evening. I never allowed smoking in my recording studio, which of course meant that the area around the front door looked like a cigarette butt farm.

You should worry at least as much about your furniture.
Collect some of her old panty hose. Washing them is your choice & I do not want to know!
Stuff 1 leg in the other & tie off the top with a rubber band or string. Now slide the thing over the head of your bass & drop it down to cover most of the body. Replace them as needed to 'freshen' the room.

No of course not. Smoke from ciggs, cigars, etc wont hurt the instrument. It can sause some discoloration and odor to a point. But peeps have been playing basses in smokey bars and homes since the day they started playing them.
I would worry if the finish is lacquer, Linseed or tung oil. If it's poly-anything, it should be OK but it's gonna look and stink like crap if the smoke gets to it.
I would also keep it in the case, cover the amp and pedals, etc.

Just look closely at smokers teeth. Yellow and dingy. Your Bass and case are affected in much the same way. Not only on the body of the guitar or bass but check out the inlays on the fretboard and the fret dots on the neck. Not good.
