Smoothest RW strings?

Well for me, Pressurewounds didn't sound or feel anywhere close to rounds, but as mentioned my rounds are Dunlop SuperBrights or anything DR Nickel. Maybe they are close to GHS rounds....keeping in mind that even GHS Progressives are too dark/dull for me. Guess it's one of those things you have to find out for yourself :)

OP here, both would be a bonus but feel/comfort is the main issue.

That being the case, and although I don’t have a great solution, but I can tell you with a great degree of certainty to lie down and avoid Roto-Sound Swing bass at all costs....LOL

Actually, I’ve been playing roundwounds exclusively for over 42 years. Frankly, I find the the clunk from flats more obnoxious than string squeak, and significantly more painful to listen to sonically than round wounds effect my fingers.....I guess.

Have a good one, and good luck finding your favorite strings.

I have many basses and want variety; several with SS flats and many (actually more) with RWs.

Its funny how some basses seem to react differently with the same strings LOL!

Trust me, I get the flat wound string sound from a historical perspective, but much like I can appreciate a 57 Volkswagen Beetle, I wouldn’t want to drive another one, unless there was no other alternative.

I’ve also encountered variance in the sound of a certain brand on the same bass. It’s sometimes like I’ve just installed factory seconds.... Back in the 70’s when I was touring, I often had to discard individual strings from a set because they were dead right out of the wrapper. I’m too cheap to do that today.

What are your fav strings?

Currently I’m using DR Low Riders on my PB Deluxe. I need to find a different brand for my Warwick. I’ve Been getting hellacious overtones on the B string. I tried Warwick Strings and they sounded OK for about 20 hours, then it was down hill from there.

if you have any suggestions I’m all ears, but the B string needs a tapered Ball end or it will not install correctly on the tail piece. I think Di Adarios sound fine on it, but they don’t make a tappered B.

I always suggest Elixirs Nanoweb (either their Nickel Plated Steels or Stainless Steels) for prolonged consistent usage. They do have taper wound low-B, but only NPS. I don't recall they've made SS taper wound.

D'Addario makes tapered strings. AAMOF, they make lots of them, so not only for the low-B. But, mostly you have to get them in singles. I usually purchase their 4 string set and an additional single string for the tapered low-B.

Thanks for the tip. AAMOF?. BTW, the problem I find with non Warwick tapered strings is on most strings, the taper is for string through the body instruments. With the Warwick, it is not string through, and usually the taper ends on the pick up side of the bridge, which I suspect is the reason for the harmonics.

Anyway, I check it out Thanks again.

D'Addario tapered part is 2" long from the ball end, and IIRC, Elixir taper wound length is either the same 2" or slightly less than that. So, these aren't too long for top bridge load or just about passing the saddles on thru-body stringing.

AFAIK, tapered strings that you referred as having too long taper part (or could be exposed core) are those with 3" taper length, i.e. DR Long Necks and there might be others.
