So close, so far away (Fender content)

Grab a black American P bass, and a FRS P with the block inlays, neck swap, and sell the other one is about as close as you will get, I think. Though the FRS is Mexican, beautiful necks though, kinda like a GEddy Lee neck

Geeeeeeez guys. He never once stated that he hates Squier basses. And he made a great case for why he wants what he wants. Play and enjoy your Squier and leave this guy alone! He didn't come here for a lecture. He had a very specific question that was a reasonable request.

It's as though he's not allowed to want what he wants if you disagree with it.

Dozens of times.I have walked into a shop and (from across the room) I thought I had found Excalibur only to be disappointed on closers inspection.

It doesn't matter why he doesn't want a Squier. He doesn't want one. Let it go.

If what he wants doesn't exist, just say that and be done with it. If there is a way to put some American Fender parts together to get what he wants, then help him figure that out or don't bother.

"How darest thou not likest my choice in basses good sir! A duel to defend my honor! En guard!!!!" o_O

I had similar 'desires'... so I assembled this:
American Spec. body
Geddy Lee (CIJ) neck
Custom (my choices) hardware, etc

I have about $800.00 invested... I think I could get close to that in a sale... but wasn't thinking about resale when I built it- just wanted this look / feel.

You could always build one. You can get Fender American black block jazz necks and black finished bodies all day long....well, when they're in stock (which is more and more often). I could link you to a place that has both a black loaded american p bass body (a few different one's I think even) and a loaded fender american jazz black block neck, all you'd have to do is bolt the neck on, string it and set it up. Or do like me and slowly but surely buy all the parts needed to build one from the classifieds here on TB. (I'm almost ready to assemble a p-bass, I got everything here except the body). BTW the Squier VMs and CVs are not "entry level", the affinity is, the VM and CV are more like mid-level now...the low end of mid-level but still. You should try closing your eyes and just listen and feel and try forget what it says on the headstock! I felt the same as you a few years ago, but then just for modding opportunities I bought a VM Jag from the pawn shop...changed my mind about these guitars, I'm not afraid to gig with at all and do so often.

Could always go the Warmoth route. They have tons of P bass bodies in their store and near equal numbers of maple necks with block inlays. With just a little extra love you could easily have the specs and quality that you want, so long as you can get past it not having that actual sticker on the headstock.

As for whether Fender makes an American P with a J neck, they don't. Unless something was added recently that I am unaware of. They do make an Active Deluxe Precision which is a P with a J neck, PJ pickups and 3band pre. There is also a "special run" model at Musicians Friend and Guitar Center that is a P body with PJ pickups, all passive with the Geddy Lee signature model neck. However both of these are imports.

Yup, my cheap chinese Squier, i put an EMG-GZR in it, done.

I too was once of the thought that, no way, these basses probably , you know, suck.

When an old fart like me doesn't have 2-3 grand to through at a "Dream Precision", this does more then just get the job done, i have no complaints about my cheapo what so ever.

I found a 2014 Fender American Standard P bass, Black and Maple in a pawnshop the other day. Excellent shape, played great as well. Only issue is it has a Quarter Pounder in it not my cup of tea, but an easy change, and no case for 899.00. I know they will deal on it as well. Thought that was a pretty darn good starting price though.
