Have u seen the new Fender Elite series? Bass Player recently reviewed a gorgeous all black Jazz, I think the P is a PJ, but the Jazz was all black, maple fingerboard with the beauuuutiful pearly black blocks...
Fender Design Experience? U may be able to get a P with Jazz neck size (" A" neck, right? 1.5")

The Fender site doesn't offer a jazz neck with black blocks as far as I can tell, it also doesn't tell you if it's American, Mexico, or China made. If anyone from Fender's web team can see this, I really don;t like what they've done to the site. It was much easier to navigate and the search worked a hell of a lot better before they started mucking around with it, I've got where I hate to even try to find anything on the Fender site anymore, whereas before i was on there almost everyday comparing this and that....it's a shame, it was damn near perfect before the changes, now it's almost a total disaster.
I say it loud and proud , I play a Indonesian Squier I paid $99 for used..when the band i bass in graduates from seedy bars, marinas and the occasional 300 person summer fair then and only then will I starve myself for a Mia Fender p bass..my crystal ball says I wont hit the big time anytime soon so for now its blenders for my blunders...

Japanese Fenders are hard to beat. Quality has been consistent throughout the times while both MIM and MIA had their bad moments.

Sound wise, what neck you have or what body the pickups are mounted on doesn't matter whatsoever.
As for feeling comfortable, of course but a bass won't play without a pickup. If you get my point.

I finally found what I was looking for- almost. Having nothing but active double buck basses, I have been wanting to get a passive P-bass (thanx to all you P-bass nuts on TB! Have I utterly failed in finding my dream Fender, online and on foot, or are they even out their? I can go new or used. Any ideas?
That's a Classic Vibe '70s P (top of the Squier line). I've played that bass on a number of ocassions and I think you're doing yourself a disservice by dismissing it. I think that bass sounds and plays better than most MIMs and many MIAs I've played recently. I even like the pickups - and I never like import pups.
I used to look down on Squiers too and would never consider going lower than MIM, but these days, the level of quality from these Asian factories is higher than it's ever been. It sounds like you immediately rejected the bass without actually playing it. If that's the case, I recommend taking another trip to the pawn shop.
Resale value shouldn't even be a concern. Unless you buy used, you'll take a much bigger hit on resale with an MIA (believe me, I know). You can easily recoup whatever you end up paying for a pawn shop Squier if you decide to sell it.
I gave it a good run thru, not as good as some MIA's I've tried out, but then I'm no expert either. First thing I thought was bridge & pups could be swapped.
Doesn't the wood make a difference? Not challenging you but it am still sorting all this out. One could fill an encyclopedia with quotes from this forum about the benefit of different woods in both the body and neck. My only experience here was owning a Schecter Stiletto with a basswood body, after a few years I bought another Stiletto with similar pups with a maple body. The improvement was tremendous. Would you maintain that the body is irrelevant, and let the electronics govern the tone?

They've got Fender decals you can put on it...
It's got every spec you asked for! It's destiny that you found it. Swap out the pickups, slap some flats on it and you're good to go.
But if the overall quality of the bass is subpar, I understand. If all else fails, build one with the proper Fender parts.
