in the nashville numbering system, how do i notate an F major chord in the key of G major. also, what scale would i use to play over that chord?

If see Fmaj and Gmaj i would assume it's in the key of C
Would your song make sense that way?

If not, I generally expect a bVII chord to be a dominant 7 chord (because that's what you'd get if alterd the usual F# down to F and kept the other tones in the key of G) so F mixolydian would be the scale I'd play*


* not that think in modes over chords...I just play chord tones and fill in the rest by ear/habit​

i was thinking specifically about the Allman Brothers song Ramblin Man.

The changes go like this

it feels like it's in the key of G, but i suppose that it's easier to write in nashville notation if it's written in C.

b7 is how you'd write it in nashville numbering.

bVII is how you'd write it in roman numeral analysis.

It's in the key of G, not C. Its a modal interchange chord borrowed from the parallel mixolydian. Play G mixolydian over it.

Yep, simply what it is. F is the flatted 7th in the key of G, so it'd be "b7" in Nashville Numbering.
