I grew up in the 50s and 60s in the New York suburbs. These were the cutomary rules for Valentine's Day gifts between husband/wife or boyfriend/girlfriend:
1.Only the male gives the female a gift. A female may give a greeting card to the male, but that was unusual.
2. There were only 2 accetable gifts for Valentine's Day: roses and/or a box of chocolates. The amount spent depended upon one's income level.
I guess things have really changed in 50 years: now the husband gives the wife a tool for housework and the wife gives the husband a very expensive toy.
