SO I get my wife.....

Cool bass dude. I wouldn't worry about giving her a vacuum. My wife, in-laws, parents, siblings, and friends give me Lowe's and Home Depot cards for Christmas and Birthday presents all the time. Basically, my wife shares my present every time I use the cards for home improvements. No one seems to think it's out of line and frankly, I appreciate them. A woman should be cool with a vacuum. Is that wrong?

Yes it is.

X2...

But I guess Im a pig... oink oink
or I have a wife that don't care about material goods or some made up traditions...

Yes it is.

I find that you speak way to soon. In some situations I can imagine a vacuum being a wonderful gifts and yes, in others I could see it being insulting. What I'm trying to say is, you don't know the circumstances of their household, and therefore have no right to call his act of getting his a vacuum a damning move by any means. I've gathered that in this case Gcool is the financial support of the household, which he supports by playing bass. This in mind, lets assume that his wife is a stay at home wife who up until recently has been using a supremely inferior vacuum. Have you used a dreadful vacuum and then compared it to one of these that he bought her? I have, and assuming that this is indeed the scenario, that vacuum is a wonderful gift.
Now, I could see it being insulting if say, his wife has a career and the financial support of the household is split evenly, or even in her favor. THAT would indeed be insulting in my opinion. That being said, lets get off of our high horse. I'm sure this guy is not some sort of sexist. If he is working and she is home, why shouldn't she be active and maintain the place? And why shouldn't he give her whatever he can to make her work easier? I mean, does she HAVE to stay home and do housework? Absolutely not, here is a list of possible combinations for a household...

1.Husband works...Wife stays home...
2.Wife works...Husband stays home...
3.Husband works...Wife works...House duties split evenly
4.No one works...Ummm...
5.The Husband or Wife works...The other stays home and does nothing...

1-3 are perfectly acceptable systems, 4 obviously doesn't work, and 5 either means someone has someone else by the nads, or someone is ridiculously pampered beyond their worth. I'm assuming your househould falls under 3. Good for you. Because other peoples may fall under 1 or 2, it doesn't make the non-working member a friggin slave.

PS: I'm sure the amount of times that this dude has told his wife that he loves her means more to her than any kind of jewel, or other material thing like that...And I'm sure he is going to remember this next year when he picks out a gift for her. ;)

I have asked this question of all the women I know and every one of them has said that a) it does not matter who makes the money and b) a vacuum is not an acceptable gift for Valentines under ANY circumstances. Even my mother who is 87 has said that if I got my better half a vacuum for Valentines she would personally slap me for being an inconsiderate ass.

A friends wife said it is usually cultural what is acceptable but if her husband got her a vacuum, and she is a stay at home mom, they would have one hell of a fight and he would be on the couch.

And yes both of us work (she makes 6 figures, I don't) and she does most of the housework because it has to be done exactly to her specifications and if it is not EXACT she redoes it anyway.
