I wonder if they are ever gonna change it. For me its the reason not to buy Fender anymore. I was close on buying a new American Standard Jazz, until i saw pics of it without a PG. If i'm gonna pay top $$ , which we do in europe (say $1550) i don't expect a hacked up body.

My 1975 Fender Jazz doesn't have any holes in it, so i can keep the PG off.
Lakland Skyline JO & DJ don't have it, so i guess my next bass will be a Lakland JO.

The hole is there for Fender fans who love their Fender way too much....in the wrong way....you know the ones .

Anyone know how to fill it in or something? Especially that trench. That thing is kind of obnoxious. But I don't think it should be a selling point. If you really want a non pickguard bass, why not get a squier VM, and then mod the electronics? It would be a ton cheaper than buying a Lakland or something.

I just got a '94 MIM P bass and it doesn't have the hole. My MIM Squier '97 doesn't either.

Yours might be virgins then.
