So, I'm thinking about tongue piercings...

I've got a lot better things to do than "care for" foreign objects poked through my tongue. The discomfort and inconvenience would be enough, but the health risk is unacceptable.
To keep a tongue piercing free from infection the first thing one should not do is rinse his or her mouth out with any type of listerine. This can cause irritation and discoloration to the piercing. Never clean the piercing with hydrogen peroxide or rubbing alcohol, this can cause serious injury. Salt water is also an effective rinse.
After getting pierced the tongue will swell up to about twice its normal size and lymph will come out from the wound. Do not worry, this is normal. Swelling will start reducing in three to four days and go away completely in seven to eight. The tongue should be fully healed within 6-8 weeks. During those weeks do not play with or touch the tongue. Always rinse tongue after it has been touched or after eating something. You may want to avoid eating hot or spicy foods during the healing process, as this may cause discomfort and hinder the healing process. One should only eat small, soft amounts of food like mashed bananas, mashed potatoes, cereal, cold soup, applesauce or rice. Ultra slim fasts are a great way to get the protein and vitamins you need and you might lose a few pounds, too. Rinse mouth out before and after every meal or drink. Do not drink alcohol or coffee. Do not smoke. If one must smoke be sure to rinse mouth before and after having a cigarette. Smoking too much will slow down the healing process and cause discomfort. Do not use chewing tobacco or non-filter cigarettes.
After swelling goes down, cut back on your mouth rinsing. When tongue is fully healed it is only necessary to rinse mouth out in the morning and evening. The piercer will usually pierce the tongue with a longer bar or piece of jewelry to allow the tongue to swell. If the bar or jewelry feels too big or long it can be replaced when the tongue has healed and swelling has gone down. Do not take the bar or jewelry out before healing is complete or swelling is gone. A piercer or yourself can change the bar or jewelry.
Always sterilize the jewelry you will be putting in your tongue so as to prevent infection. In many cases, after the tongue is fully healed a crown or hard spot will appear around the hole in the tongue. This will generally go away within a month or two of the tongue being fully healed. If tongue hurts more than 8 days after piercing and swelling has not gone down go to the doctor. Do not just go to the piercing shop unless they specify otherwise. Following these proper steps will result in a quick and aesthetic recovery.

The guys around town will certainly pay more for your company now...that is what a tongue piercing was originally for.

most are sexually related, and the tongue is IMO for homosexual men or women.
**edit, someone already hit on this. But you have to look at what a body alteration symbolizes. If you just want to be cool, it may backfire because it has a purpose that says I like to $*&^ *&@*.
I had 17 piercings about 11 years ago(ages 13-18) and I never got my tongue done. #1. is the reason above #2 you can ship your teeth with the balls on the jewelry.

As long as you can take the pain (they are, by reputation, the most painful of body piercings), and you truly want it...go for it.
Though really...the only reason you get a tongue piercing is for reasons we can't discuss here at TB...
Well I've never had my tongue pierced but my ex-wife did (NO it didn't make a difference) as well as some friends. NONE of them ever said it hurt. I have had my nipples done (because the ex-wife wanted them done and you know what guys will do for chicks) and I can assure you a 12 guage needle through your nipple F**KING HURTS!!!!!!!!!!!! I've had my eyebrows and lebret done as well, no pain. Right now all I have is my ears pierced, my body tends to reject other facial piercings.

I want my tongue pierced, I also want my lips pierced, not sure if I want a snake bite or not... Thinking about my nose, and my eye brow. I also want full on sleeves... But I change my mind SOOOO often im afraid to start anything because i'll not want it eventually, or i'll want something different.

Lacey Filosa, 20, said the inch-long metal bar nearly put her six feet underground. "It almost killed me, in fact. It did three times," she said. Filosa recently had her tongue pierced in a shop. Just days later, her tongue swelled up and friends rushed her to the emergency room. The next thing Filosa remembers is waking up a month later with tubes poking out of her body. "I had my family see me hooked up to machines and wires because of this barbell," she said.
It turned out an aggressive infection spread from the point of the piercing and ravaged her body. Doctors believe bacteria in her mouth crept into her bloodstream through the hole punched in her tongue, Filosa said. "They told my mom needed a miracle to keep me alive," she said. Filosa dropped 32 pounds and couldn't look in the mirror without crying.
"The bigger scars are where they had to drain the infection," she said. Lacey's Medical Bills topped $500,000, but insurance paid for all but $1,000 of that amount.

Great example of why getting pierced in a good shop is important, and why proper aftercare is also important.
If the shop isn't clean and doesn't have an autoclave onsite, run far away. There is a certain amount of leeway you have to give for image's sake - after all, this is "counterculture" (or used to be). But beneath the tattoos and wild hair and scowls and other image things, a proper piercing establishment should have the necessary safety precautions in place. If you actually have a conversation about cleanliness with these people, many pros will even go as far as to criticize the lack of hygienic standards in your average mall ear piercing shop.
The piercer should be either using single-use equipment or metal equipment which has been autoclaved. If he or she doesn't take it out of a sealed, sterile package in front of you immediately prior to piercing you, you're in the wrong shop. It's not out of line to ask to see the person's license either. Remember that this is minor surgery, after a fashion.
There are hundreds of thousands of piercings which have gone "according to plan" and haven't been a problem for anyone (except for the pierced individual's uptight parents). If you know what to expect and aren't picking the first hole in the wall establishment you find on a drunken whim, it's really very easy to avoid the horror stories.

Skip the tounge ring. It causes halitosis, tooth decay, possible breakage and chipping of teeth, sensitive teeth, on and on and on. I had mine for 8 years. Wore it everyday. My teeth started getting really sensitive and like any foreign object in your body, it tries to reject it. Causing the above issues.
But if you want to be cool, by all means.

Gee, what a great idea. Pierce your tongue, in the most bacteria-laden, perpetually moist area of your body. And one that has some large blood vessels, too!!
To me this has always been among the dumbest and worst possible ideas you could pursue. The stories above illustrate why.

When I was a kid I wouldn't get a tongue piercing that's just one more thing for your Dad to grab ahold of when he's pissed off at you.
How do you wake up one day and go, "You know what I'm gonna do today? I'm gonna get a piece of steel shot RIGHT throught the middle of my tongue! Yeah! And I'm gonna pay some big fat hairy sweaty tattoo guy to do it to me too! Yeah. Then, I'll get a piece of steel shot through my **** too yeah...then I'll get a steel bar that sticks outta my *** and makes my underwear stick out even further, then I'll get a keychain attached to my ***** so I'll always know where my keys and my ***** are."
Mr. Leary has lots of life advice. Perhaps you should have a listen to his Lock and Load album?
