So, I'm thinking about tongue piercings...

When I was a kid I wouldn't get a tongue piercing that's just one more thing for your Dad to grab ahold of when he's pissed off at you.

How do you wake up one day and go, "You know what I'm gonna do today? I'm gonna get a piece of steel shot RIGHT throught the middle of my tongue! Yeah! And I'm gonna pay some big fat hairy sweaty tattoo guy to do it to me too! Yeah. Then, I'll get a piece of steel shot through my **** too yeah...then I'll get a steel bar that sticks outta my *** and makes my underwear stick out even further, then I'll get a keychain attached to my ***** so I'll always know where my keys and my ***** are."

Mr. Leary has lots of life advice. Perhaps you should have a listen to his Lock and Load album? :D

First, let my preface this by saying that I think body mods are cool. I have a good sized tattoo (and I'm planning more) and my fiancee has some interesting piercings (She has her conches gauged to 0s, both nostrils, a couple of other ear piercings, and she had her sternum/cleavage pierced, but took that out). Personally, peircings aren't for me, but I have no issues with people getting them.

However, I think that the three trashiest piercings are:

3 - Eyebrows
2 - Nipples
1 - Tongues

That's just my $.02

i've had my tongue pierced for 15yrs now (the only piercing i have left in over the years).. never any issues, other than the occasional re-piercing it myself after job interviews (tongue is one of the fast healing muscles in the body, and the hole will close up after a few hours). i've always preferred the longer barbell (currently have a 7/8ths 16 gauge) and have never chipped any teeth..

I like to be a rebel bass player and go against the norm by not getting any tattoos or piercings. It makes me feel like a badass.

Imagine the feeling that you get presenting to others what you were dealt with randomly (i.e., your natural state since you were born), vs. adapting man-made / artificial things to your body to be accepted by other people as "cool?"

Hey, to each their own.

Had mine done for 11 years. I love it, and it feels very weird on the odd occasion I take it out. And yes, I'm straight, my teeth are fine, my speech is still perfect, I can still roll my 'R's, and the missus loves it (for reasons I can't go into here ;) ).

Venoms are very cool, but come with a somewhat longer healing time than regular tongue piercings, complete with the longer period with affected speech, affected ability to eat and so on, so be prepared. They also hurt quite a bit more, as they're directly going through the muscle of the tongue, rather than the median fibrous septum (the line down the middle of the tongue) that a regular tongue piercing goes through.

There's always scare stories about piercings, and they all come down to one of three things - bad hygiene during the piercing procedure, bad aftercare, or an incorrectly performed piercing. The majority of them come from bad aftercare, where the person who gets pierced is not prepared to take the care required to heal the piercing. For instance, the tongue heals extremely fast (most mucous membrane areas do), but subjecting a fresh piercing to unnecessary abuse can lead to problems. Don't talk a lot while it's healing. Don't eat unsuitable food for the first week or so - get used to soup and ice cream. You could bite your tongue (since it'll be swollen) or bite the bar. And rinse your mouth out with nothing stronger than salt water, or, at worst, diluted Listerine.

Your initial jewellery will be a longer bar than you would regularly wear - this is to accommodate the swelling. After 2 weeks or so, you'll return to the piercer to have the bar downsized. Keeping the longer bar in for longer than is necessary (ie, after the swelling subsides) could potentially lead to tooth damage, since the long bar will just loll in your mouth, rather than being snug with your tongue.

Screw the haters. Nobody need know it's there unless you show them. If the thought of having a tongue piercing makes you happy, then do it. This is the sort of thing you must do for yourself - if someone is letting thoughts of what other people will think influence their decision to get it, they're probably not ready for it anyway.

why is it that people automatically assume I'm a homosexual because I want a tongue piercing?

Huh? That would never occur to me. Seriously.

What would occur to me is that you're an idiotic poser who'll never get a "real" job, who pathetically wants to fit in with the "cool" kids, and who'll never be able to talk without a speech impediment if you follow through on this idea.

But that's my problem.

I can understand why someone would get their tongue pieced as an aid to sensual pleasure; in fact, I encourage it! But I just can't fathom why someone would do it if that isn't the goal. Too many downsides atmo.

Well, you have to admit that pierced ears are classier than pierced eyebrows, and a pierced nostril is a whole lot less trashy than a peirced nipple. It might not be your thing, but you have to admit that there is a range there.

Couldn't agree with you more.

Back in the bad old days, early 80's, it was a novelty to see a guy with one pierced ear (which I did).

Then, it was two ears, multiples in each ear, eybrow, nose, etc. To me, it just got silly.
