So what do I do with them?

Ok I guess I'm just not meant to part with either of my red/maple 92 Foundations (4 and 5 string respectively and both with superferrites). Oh I've had interest but before its over I find myself on the waiting end of the communication with new pics (if its a trade offer) or whatever from the other party and I never hear from them again. And sadly since my inbox gets full fast like a fool Ive deleted PMs from them by accident and then can't remember who they are to give a nudge.

Anyway, I wasn't asking a ton for them, they aren't in that bad a shape, I just don't get it. But thats ok...they /are/ great basses and they are now OFF the market.............

But...they are Red/Maple and I don't like that at all. :scowl::atoz: Thats their only 'crime' so to speak. I want to change that but whatever I do to one has to be done the same way to the other -- keep them true twins. I'm just not sure what I want to do to them or exactly how to go about it. I do want them both blacked out thats for sure. I have toyed with putting tremelos on both of them, adding extra pups, defretting them, the ideas go on and on ... I just can't really decide what to do with them. :confused:

I am open to suggestions for anything from mild mods to totally hotrodding so what would some of you fine lowenders out there do to them if they were yours? ^_^

Whammy bars rule and Ive always wanted a bass with one but I chickened out because of the chances of screwing up when Id go to route the body for the hardware of 'em.

And why not keep them identical? They are both the same year, their serial numbers are fairly close together. They are already identical in every way with the only exception being one is a 4 and one is a 5.

Funny you should mention owning two identical cars as an example. Ive been there and done that. LOL I had a 77 Tbird and a 78 Tbird at the same time. Yea, they weren't totally identical to a gearhead (one had buckets and floor/351 and was gray, the other had bench and column, 302 and was 2 tone blue) but they were alike in body style. But then I had a 79 Tbird buckets/floor 302 that was the exact same 2 tone blue with that 78 eventually...wheee (also had two '68 Chargers at the same time too...R/T 440 and coupe 318, both black)

Anyway...flats on one, rounds on the other. Ok, who gets the flats, who gets the rounds? Which one stays passive and which one gets put active? Though to be fair I have an 85 Black/rosewood Foundy4 and I really don't play the 5 that much so I guess by default the 92 Foundy would get the active/flats treatment?

OH and for what its worth, the two Chargers were nothing alike. The 3 Thunderbirds were nothing alike but I sure confused the heck out of people with the two blue Tbirds LOL (there /are/ subtle grille/taillight differences between them but it always threw people anyway)

Yea I had it tuned BEADG, then went DEADG cause of some drop D guiturds I was practicing with for a while but I think I'd go EADGC next time around. And Im not sure how Id like flats to be honest. Ive always used rounds and then my T40 came with halfrounds or some weirdness and I hated that. I played an accoustic bass once and couldnt stand the strings that were on it. I dunno, were those flats? LOL I really don't know those strings.

And wow, no suggestions really? Im stunned. This place is a well of imagination and ideas on how to mod basses and I thought I'd get more reaction then this. Well the nights still fairly young I suppose.....

Fixing something that isn't broke is a very good point and part of my dilemma. It is mainly their color that I don't like about them. Though I also am not that fond of the second gen Peaveye headstock design on them either so the headless comment was kind of cool LOL But I don't think I even want to go there as far as making that conversion if it can be done?

Now neither one are perfect. The 5 needs a new paint job in a serious way. The 4 needs new pots and a new G tuner and has a slight bit of mojo on it. The two could use setups but other than that they are fine otherwise. And maple necks... I learned on a maple neck, those 2 and 3 other of my basses are maple necks (my Memphis, my Squier and my T40). Then I have 5 that are rosewood and I do prefer rosewood both for feel, sound and aesthetics any day to be honest. But I am 'used' to maple lets put it that way.

If you think you may want to sell or trade them in the future, IMHO, refinishing, defretting, or routing them will kill them. Tastes change, and even yours will, too. Not long from now you may rethink how you feel about their cosmetics, and rediscover their musical worth.

Bottom line, don't wreck 'em for someone else. All IMHO.

If you really want to sell or trade them, it should not be as hard once the recession abates somewhat. Times are a bit tough at the moment, as I am sure you know. I'd bet the folks who backed out so gracelessly were bit in the backside by their own financial reality.

Oh I understand their musical worth and I fully understand altering them in any way can kill them cause I know they are rather sought after and no longer made and are killer basses as they are. I just can't get past their red. I thought I could, I can't. Ive mentioned at various times what I would like to do with them. Sometimes I think I can deal with the red, other times I can't. So they just sit together and never get touched. I have a fair number of basses and they all get played...just not those two. I really shouldn't have the number of basses that I have (and I know what I have pales in comparison so the numbers some people here have :p) but darn it, theres no sense in owning it if you aren't going to play it you know.

And I can fully understand things the way the economy is. Im not upset that no one ever got back with me. I do understand (though a simple 'I cant do it afterall' would have been nice). I had to back out on a Fingerprint Glow '81 Ric 4001 because I couldn't sell some of what I had to cover it and couldnt scrap up the scratch on my own because of how things are right now. So its going around with everyone. :(

So I take it that so far the consensus is to leave em as they are and just put em up until things turn around economy wise, or I do :p, huh?

Oh and Peavey did install Kahlers factory on some of their Dynas. Dynas are badass to begin with. I can't even begin to imagine how much more badass my Dyna would be had it came with a Kahler! :hyper:

Heres a pic I took of them last year. Their shade of red doesn't seem to compress down well (from bitmap to jpeg) so they look a little mottled but they aren't:

I am picturing that and that does look good, Darkstrike. ^_^

EDIT When you say maple Im assuming you mean strip the paint and stain/gloss the bodies so its natural wood? Thats how I was picturing it. That with the maple necks and all black hardware...yea that would look cool...and the whammy bars....just got to get the courage up somehow and make sure I don't screw the routing up IF I decide to do that. *ulp*
