No, it doesn't. As I said before, there is problem(s) with the volume pot. Maybe it's cooked while trying to solder on it.

Hi Folks,
how normal/acceptable is the humming/buzzing you get when not touching the strings or other metal-parts on the instrument?
I´ve got a brandnew ibanez sr600e today that buzzes more than my warwick rockbass corvette. And my Squier Affinity Jazz has no buzz at all...

That really depends on who you ask. Many folks think that that kind of hum is perfectly acceptable. I, for one, do not.
Ditto here, but I think mine does that due to coated strings. Which is unfortunate because I LOVE the aesthetic. Regardless, I plan on eventually upgrading the electronics, so that being the potential cause will be definitively addressed.
so it really seems to depend on what devices are around or how much wifi is going on or something..

I just noticed today that I have a bass that hums, and it's a bit odd. NOT the same one that has coated strings which may not allow full grounding of the strings. Anyway, this one has a push/pull pot on the volume for active/passive. I noticed today that it always hummed when passive, unless it was completely off, and always hummed in active unless completely cranked or off - anything in the middle had noise. Thoughts? Pot going bad? Seems like it should be a simple fix, but I don't know much about this stuff.
Yup. Entirely different rig was tried. Just hums when the volume isn't cranked on active, and all the time when in passive.
Alright, maybe not. Just doubled checked to make sure. Tested bass, straight to amp, no pedals or FX loop used. No hum on one amp, hum as described on the other. Weird.
Does the hum stop when touch the bridge or pots? If so, you potentially need shielding. Check your ground wire as well.
Nope. It persists no matter what I touch. I think maybe pot going bad or something. We'll see. Not a ton of hum, and completely covered up using my noise gate for dirt. Not ideal, but certainly livable as I pretty much ALWAYS have the volume cranked, which has no hum.
Upgrading the electronics won't make that buzz go away. You need to shield the cavities and ground the shielding.
I've known people to solder an alligator clip to a short length of wire, with a loop on the other end, pinky in the loop, clip on the bridge, to deal with the coated string ground issue.
