So I say to myself, Is it good being left in the dark

Funny thing is (to me), in another couple of hundred years or so, it may be considered grammatically correct to start all informal sentences with "So"
That's the thing about language, it's always in flux. What would have been unacceptable grammar-wise before can turn into common usage over time.
It's like a continuation of a previous conversation. Sounds more casual (as noted). Or that's how that person thinks and just puts down what's on their mind. If it were edited as a formal document I'm sure there would be changes.

I will take "So" over starting a sentence with "Um". Especially when written.

Yup. And one I'm guilty of. Not in writing, but in speaking. I've really gotta work on that!
