Software for learning theory?

Hello all,

Does anyone have any recommendations or personal experience with an interactive music theory software?

I would like to learn theory as well as musical notation (writing and reading). Ideally, it would be a software that you can plug your bass into and play notes. Also, beneficial would be something where you have the option to work with the bass staff.

I have a few books but the benefit of software is that you're able to check your answers whereas with books self study, you're never really sure if your work is accurate.

Ricci Adams' Musictheory.net has several software tools you might check out. Band in a box comes to mind as does Guitar Pro, however I do not think those will give what you are asking about.

There are several standard notation memory game type tools. Google can find them for you.

But IMHO theory is best learned in an easy chair with a good theory book and your scale charts handy. Music on the music stand and your bass close by.

Technique IMO is best learned from DVD's with your bass in your lap as you watch. Course technique is best learned from a live instructor sitting knee to knee with you.

Emusictheory.com has some OK stuff you can use online for free. Their downloadable is only $12 and has some added features. This software gives you exercises but you need to do some general reading or have a teacher as it really is not a tutorial program that holds your hand.
