Double Bass Solo Tuning Setup

I've been thinking about mixing solo and orchestra gauge strings for a E A E A tuning. Does anyone have experience with this tuning, or have experience with changing your bass from orchestra to solo gauge strings? Is their anything that I should be aware of that could damage my bass or setup recommendations?

Edgar Meyer does something similar to this. I think it is EBEA, but I'm not entirely sure. That way he can still get the low notes at the bottom of the extension. Provided you are using solo strings and not cranking up orchestral strings, you shouldn't really experience any problems as they are intended to be used that way.

If possible check the solo string tensions before buying as they tend to be higher tension ( and thinner gauge ) than orchestral strings, to avoid weird tension differences across the strings.
