Funny, I wouldn't lump Yazz in with Lisa Stanfield (who was more 80's Soul / R&B, apart from the stuff with Coldcut), or Cathy Dennis (who was straight up 90's pop, before she stopped performing, and became a highly successful song writer for other pop acts).

I guess because of the prevalence of the TB303 squelching it's way throughout "the only way is up", I associate Yazz with Acid House, and The Second Summer of Love (although as I recall, the album "Wanted" mixed up other genres too).

Well, it was all the same to me, I was more of a 4AD/Factory guy. That, and while not necessarily Goth per se, Goth adjacent…Love+Rockets, The Mission, The Bunnymen, The Church, Chameleons, the return of Wire, stuff of that ilk.

...in fact, on principle I'd love to find more non-80s albums that fit the bill, if for no other reason than to prove to myself that whatever qualities those original 3 albums possess that I find so appealing aren't locked to a specific time period.

Likewise, although I've always loved synths, so I was very aware of what was going on in dance music in the late 80's, by which time The Shamen, and Jesus Jones were fusing house, acid, and techno with rock.

I suppose, know that I think of it, both "Liquidizer" and "In Gorbachev We Trust" sort of fulfil the OP's brief, being 80's techno-pop, but are much more underground in their appeal.

Of the three listed, I only know the Tears for Fears, so going from that and expanding a bit, I'll suggest TV on the Radio's last three albums: Dear Science, Nine Types of Light, and Seeds. Maybe check out Arcade Fire's Reflektor and some recent Tame Impala as well.

(Question was based on my inexplicable interest in techno-pop, and particularly my contention that much of the techno-pop music from the 1980s was far more sophisticated than it might appear on the surface.

Also, you won't get any points for suggesting "Peter Gabriel" he's already well-represented in my music collection!)
