Some band rants

Hey guys a little back story I have been in my current band for about two and a half years. It is four piece originals rock band with me (bassist), two guitar players/singers and the drummer. We are all pretty good friends and get a long well outside "band business," however inside the band I find myself getting annoyed with a few things. First off because these two things happened again last night, I play a Fender MIJ Precision bass through a Peavey Tour 450 and Mesa PowerHouse 6x10 cab, plenty loud, however other than the drummer the guitarists can never seem to hear me. We practice in a small room and I have tried turning up and I also play pretty strong on the strings. I myself have no problem hearing me and neither does the drummer, but the guitarist seems to think I am just not playing or something.

What else ticks me off is when he makes it a point to walk over and then with his pick strum my bass above the pickups and tell me to play like that because he can hear it and it is louder. That is what I do, plus while he is doing this no one else is playing so of course it is louder. It just annoys me, I turn up too loud he tells me to turn down because it drowns him out, however they turn up all the time and screech constantly. I cannot seem to win there.

Another annoying thing is now that we are writing again it is both exciting yet frustrating. What is annoying about this process is the other guitarist becomes disgruntled and bitchy fast about songs and complains a lot because he cannot think of cool guitar parts to play and is constantly tell the rest of us to change our parts or our parts are bad because he cannot think of what to play. He is basically selfish when writing, he either needs to shine in the spotlight or we are not using that part or even song. Basically both guitarists who have been in the band the longest tell the drummer and I what to play and we don't always agree with it however never seem to be able to tell them how or what to play. I know guitards will be guitards.

These are the same guys who also sing and write lyrics, which they have been saying for almost the past month now that they are meeting up to write lyrics, however have yet to come up with one freaking line. They either don't meet up or do and makes you wonder what they do. Practices are another thing, on Sunday's for example we are suppose to show up and start practice at 5-5:30, last night one of the guitarists shows up at 6:30 and we don't start practicing until close to 7. Had I known I would not of made it a point to show up for early. This is not the first or last time I am sure this happens. When they do show up they smoke how many cigarettes and also they do smoke w*ed (I do not smoke either.) Just eats a lot of time.

The other guys want to act like big rock stars, but we are far from it. Our work ethic and drive/determination sucks and we are moving along very slow. I took us close to a year last time to put out three songs. I used to think the band really had something going and could become something, however recently I have actually been more and more worrying less about the bands future and started worrying about my own. I have been looking at possibly buying a house this year and also looking into the things I want to do. The band is kind of a side hobby now at this point. I enjoy doing it and love music, but it just seems to kind of suck a lot lately. It seems it is only a important when the other guys have nothing going on which is usually not much.

I have told myself I will continue to play bass, however if the band ever goes belly up I would not join another and just become a hobbyist or like a studio musician. I had dreams of becoming a well known act and touring the country, however reality has been setting in and I have more and more accepted it. At least I can say I did it though and it was a great experience and ride. I would actually love to pickup playing my guitar again too at this point as well.

Just ranting and venting, thanks for reading and please share your experiences if you have some or even all the same.

I knOw what that feels like. Had the same problem last year with my former. It all started great and had things happen for us. Finally one thing lead to another and the band split. I just dont know if i could continue with the deceptions in bands. I am one of those guys that worked hard a fulfilling my rock n roll dream but never seemed to get there.

That's exactly it with me as well, especially that last line you typed there.

Why wouldn't you join another band? Not every band will have bandmates like you're dealing with right now. Maybe the next group of musicians you meet will be the right ones. Seems like you're giving up a little too quickly on your dream. I've been in more bands then I can count and for some reason I keep looking; however, I've given up on thinking I'll "make it" some day whatever the hell that means. I play because I love it.

Welcome to the world of music. here is the heirarchy/place of every band member in every band

Singer - Thinks they are king **** cause they are the "front man". Much ego goes to the head. Believes that they are above manual labour and usually puts little finances into the band (my voice is my instrument)

Guitarists - Sometimes as bad as the singer with the ego. Think the solos are the greatest thing since sliced bread. Ego can be through the roof and "Lead Guitar" = Loud Guitar.

Bassists - Usually the glue that binds the band both personally and musically. Also usually the guy who puts up with everyone elses ego and does the manager job as well. Books shows, organizes jamtime, gets the band paid at gigs, acts as band babysitter/therapist,etc,etc.

Drummer - Most the time they are the man in the back that no one pays attention too. Though there are times when this band member will try to act like a guitarist or vocalist (try to be a lead drummer?) This ego is usually quickly crushed by the guitarists and singer.

It sounds to me that you are very unhappy in a band. Seems to me you playing might suffer from this. Just because your either highly aggitated or straight up mad. If you leaving practice thinking man is this worth it you have to ask yourself is it? Bill Levy(former head coach of the Buffalo Bills) once said "Once you start thinking about quiting you might as well do it cos you've done made up your mind." I also wouldnt necissarly give up on a dream. I think we all know its a long road to get big. However, it sounds like you and the drummer have a good chemistry talk to him. Maybe you 2 could power up and be more of a force in the band or start a new one. I mean whats 2 guitarists without a rhthymn section?

My band consists orginaly consisted of 2 friends Ive had for over 20 years, and a old acquaintace turned good friend in the past year or two. A little over a month ago, one of my old friends was trying to controll everything. It was a hard decision to make but he's no longer in the mix. Ive only talked to him once since then. Then a few weeks ago, the other guitarist got disgruntled and slammed his guitar down. I looked at him and said "We aint doing this". He threatened to just leave, and once he saw the door was open for him to walk he changed his tone and things have been great since. He is bipolar so I expect issues but you just have to stand firm with him. I mean he appologized 100 times since then and even called later that night with tears in his voice cos he felt like a fool. Drama yea, but where isnt there its R n/f R ya know. I tried to share my personal expeirence's with ya to let ya know Im tryin to base my thoughts from experience and not my rectum.

Indeed, thanks for the responses guys. A lot of good advice and things to consider. I am not so much mad as I am am annoyed. At times I do feel like I am wasting my time and at times it is great. Like a roller coaster just like in life. My current schedule only allows me to be in one band at the time which I already dedicate a lot of time to. I'll be 26 years old this month, I guess I am just growing up and getting a little phased out of the whole "rockstar attitude." I am not giving up on playing, however I will say I have sacrificed a lot for this band and could be doing other things and I can honestly say I am not getting much out of it anymore other than something to do. I know that may come off as "just quit already!"

Welcome to my band! My last gig is May 26!

BL/Keyboardist: Constantly screws up chords at rehearsals and at gigs!
Drummer: Feels he can do whatever his creativity compels him to do with no regards to the groove. Tempo? Too slow! Too fast! No count-offs?! You just don't start playing without letting the band know! Also plays loud! This is not a rock band. Bring it down 1000!
2nd Keyboardist: Just plays random !^%$! No sense of timing!
Singer #1: Knows nothing but slow to mid tempo NeoSoul!
Singer #2: See above. Also has terrible mic technique. Literally screams into the mic overdriving the system and assaulting the listeners ears!
Singer #3: Dude must be ADHD! Just won't stop singing. Even when not singing is still vocal on the mic! Shut up already!

Whenever we add a sax or guitarist, the singers just keep singing! Solos are always stepped on. 2nd keyboardist does it too.

He he your reply made me laugh because it is often too true of this in a band. Yeah one year to put out a 3 song EP...like I said slow. Before it sounds like I am just ripping on my band I will say again they are great guys outside of band stuff, just inside band stuff it's kind of stagnant. I will say though that we have not hung out as a band a lot lately though.

Just because the dynamics of your current band sucks doesn't mean you can't find something better!

I've been there too. Fortunately, I'm in a 5 piece band now, where we are all on the same page. Sure we occasionally disagree, but I'm laughing pretty regularly at practice. :D

Good luck.

I know exactly how you feel on the writing process, I'm am in two bands now, both original bands... The 1st band... we having been jamming together for a little over a year and are in the studio right now recording three songs for a demo.... yeah only three songs in a year..... 2nd band, we having been jamming for three weeks and already have 5 songs and pretty good songs at that..... 1st band is almost done tho, drummer just got his 3rd DUI in a two year period, one before he joined and two after......

1 year - 3 songs? Bail

+1. You're wasting your times with these clowns. If it's not a source of income and you're not enjoying yourself, there's really no point in sticking around. (I think we've all been there at some point).

Do yourself a big favor and quit right now, then start looking for other guys to jam. It may take a while, but eventually you'll find the right bandmates. In the meantime, hit the woodshed and sharpen your chops...it's a better investment of your time than "jamming" with mediocre pothead guitarists who think highly of themselves.

Nice. Yeah besides the guys love for pot now, I forgot to mention on of my guitarists is on probation as well for drinking, driving and getting into a accident while way over the legal limit...:rollno: He still smokes and drinks like a fish...

I am the oldest and most mature (yet like to have fun and not try to be a dad figure) and have the most going for myself. I never hold it above the other guys, however if I had a better social life and more things going on in my life I would of quit a long time ago. I need to have a girlfriend again ;)
