Some have silks, others don't?

Just noticed, and it really isn't a big deal, more of a curiousity. Why do some bass strings have silk ends and others don't?

Mostly cosmetic. Different colors of silk help identify different makes and types.

In terms of practical consideration, silk prevents damage to the hardware on your bass by avoiding metal-to-metal contact, such as the tuner post. Also, it can prevent strings from slipping once they're installed.

That might explain something... I have thus far only used rounds of various flavors...

While the thread isn't expensive, the labor to wind the silks on the strings is. It could be a hallmark of quality. On flats I think it is to cover up ugly wrap ends. Perhaps it also has some mechanical function.

Same here, BUT, they sure do/did exist - Payson "fanned" flats, Webstrings "Detroit Flats" (now unavailable), Curt Mangan. Also, pre-2010 Fenders had no silk at the tuners' side, and I think La Bellas are the opposite:
