I've just been walking home from orchestra... some idiots driving past threw a rock at me out of the window and shouted racist abuse

the rock didn't hit, luckily... I tried to catch the numberplate but I was a bit shaken so no joy.

just needed to rant a little bit, this was just a bad end to a bad day

And even if you did report the number plate, who is to say your claim wil be taken seriously? It could be hard to prove. Yep, people will act like jerks quite often given the chance.

People suck, it is just the way it is.

While not near as bad as what happened to you, I do get the regular drive-by "Get a haircut!". It is started to get annoying just due to the lack of originality
