Builders generally aren't paying retail price for hardware, sometimes electronics, and it all matters where you live and what you want for wood. In my experience the material cost for a bass is more like $300-600 on average not that it can't go as high as you want!

And to the OP, support your local luthier! Ask around music stores, and musicians on your scene and you'll find one within driving distance for sure.

I don't know where you learned math, but in my world, we add up all the numbers before showing the results. Few if any custom builders buy enough materials to get a significant discount for parts. Lumber is another story as there are many competing resources. Just for the heck of it, i suggest googling bass parts, identify some that you would want on your bass and then start adding up. Don't forget screws, wires, little electronic bits, strings, foamy bits, glue, sandpaper, specialty tools, etcetera. You'll be well over your wild estimates before you even move onto another supplier. And has already been mentioned, that's not including labour. A $1500 custom bass will be a simple machine with low to mid-grade parts, case closed. You want something nice, start adding it up - when you think about the craftsmanship that's going into it and stop thinking in terms of the walmart builder, I'm thinking you'll get it...

Hey All,

Im a left handed bassist searching for the holy grail. The retail market selection is VERY sparse, so im looking towards luthiers to help me build one.

- 5-6 string
- Preferably Bartolinis

trying to get a look like a carvin/lecompte bass.
