I saw a fender jazz bass going for 600$ with a case and a 50w amp on a kijiji ad. The bass looked kinda strange, but after bout 20 minutes I realized why. The pickguard and control plate was one solid plastic piece. The knobs were also solid white, and looked like star knobs. Did the ever make jazzes like this? or is this a phony? a big fat phony?

I think these were the "Fender by Squier" instrumets, back in the very early 90's. The Fender logo seems to be all black, instead of a filled tracing. (Take a look at the fender logo on different headstocks--American, Mexican, and then look at the Squier logo too, and you'll understand what I mean.)
Of course, I might be wrong. I've been wrong before.

I think it could be a later 80's fender. There were some that looked like that. Ask for a serial number or a better picture. Ask if it was made in the usa.

I think there were a couple years where the style guys at Fender totally forgot what got 'em to the dance. If not mistaken, this was also the era where they messed around with the lower (?) horn and cutaway profile. Eventually returned to the earlier, classic design.

Not all single piece pick guards are squier. There are some regular MIM Fender Jazzes floating around from the early 90's with the same thing. It was right around the era of the long horn Jazz for the MIA series, as I have one of those, but a friend bought the MIM and it had the single pickguard.
