Something we can all be outraged about together.

Was it veggies that did it? Nope. My diet is MAJORITY meat-based protein with veggies giving me supplemental nutrients. So after years of battling a weight problem and trying every conceivable diet/health plan known to man (including the vegetarian route) it was a protein based diet that finally whipped it and continues to keep me healthy, so I get a good laugh when I hear about how unhealthy it is to eat meat.

Don't really want poke holes in this, I get it, but...

There's a guy I work with that we call Joe Atkins. About 10 years ago he was overweight, diabetic, had high cholesterol, high blood pressure, and all the other things that were about to contribute to his untimely death. He started the Atkins diet, and became its #1 advocate. Lost weight and was cured of it all. And for 10 years he does his best to convince people his diet is the cure all for everything. Can't tell you how many lectures I had to endure for eating a bagel every now and then - mind you, I'm in much better shape than this guy, and have 10X the energy. And he's younger than me.

Anyhow... This past year he shut up about things, and I learned he has prostate problems that he's keeping mum about. Heard it as a rumor, but then was in a stall one day next to him when he was trying to urinate. He didn't know I was there.

I'm not saying vegetarians are immune to any of that stuff, but if you piled up all ther research ever done on diets, cancer, and or prostate illnesses... The end result will be that a plant based diet is much healthier choice than a meat based diet. Especially when it's store bought meat, and not meat you're hunting yourself... Like the original meat eaters that everyone here keeps talking about.

I'd highly recommend being careful with Atkins stuff. It has its short term benefits for sure, for those who can commit to it... But it can come with a hefty price tag. And if someone starts cheating on Atkins, they might as well just put a bullet in their head cuz adding carbs turns it all to poison. Not posting this to further argue, but to share something I hope might be helpful.

It's not exactly Atkins... Everything I did and have been doing since was under doctor's orders. I do have the ability to consume carbs but it is in limited quantity. I remember liking my doctor's take on the situation because he tailored my diet for me after reading my blood test results.

I've already told you about the change, but if I can't pee all of a sudden I'll certainly be eating crow. Or plants.

By the way, Joe... You work with Joe Atkins. You're Joe Nerve. Who is the rest of the office? Joe Enchanted Island, Joey Paperweight, and Steve, I reckon...

At any rate I can see what you're doing is working for you. I just can't honestly say that I believe it's a universal thing any more than I'd believe everyone should do the Atkins thing. Incidentally I think that's where the other Joe went a bit off the rails... You'll never hear me recommend what I'm doing to anyone... One, I'm not a doctor and to be honest I really don't know why what he prescribed works ... But I'll take it! Two, I am convinced that I might be in a small minority of people who just respond well to this sort of diet... But don't tell my fellow carnivores...

Happy to hear that. Just wanna let you know that my post was good intentioned, though I realize it may have not come off that way. :) And I live in Brooklyn, NY. We're all Joes here. Well.. we used to be, anyway. Where I grew up, we had 5 houses in a row with at least 1 Joe in each (some, like mine, had 2). And one 2 doors down was a lady, my Aunt Jo.

Joe, I get what you're saying but there are genetic markers for prostate cancer too that have nothing to do with diet--meaning that for all we know diet (lack thereof or extreme regimens) has nothing to do with this particular case.

I'm glad you and GK are happy with your lifestyle choice. I'm glad that a couch potato is happy with their lifestyle choice.

What irks most folks is to be preached at, no matter what the subject and no matter how beneficial.

Veganism--as I've seen the religion preached--are as bad as Jehovah's Witnesses in their admonition of those that aren't vegans.

And I've been good friends with some (they weren't recruiting for their religion, for the record).

Now, to be fair, there is a lot of stupidity about vegetarianism/veganism. I've seen menus in California (of all places, San Francisco no less) that had *chicken* on the vegetarian menu. Seriously?

And apparently, my little fun earlier wasn't seen as very funny about my t-shirt since GK took it way out of context and then wanted to beat me on the head with it and claim I couldn't have an opinion on here since I wasn't a paying member. (I forgive you GK but man that's a wild position to hold which is why I called you a mega-troll).

See how these things can get out of hand?

Joe your posts have always seemed well intentioned brother. I never took it any other way.

This is what a 52 year old vegetarian looks like.

And at the time of the photo I was looking at the beautiful fish swimming around me, that I wasn't going to eat for dinner. :)

No wonder your wife doesn't think you're attractive. Eat a **** steak twiglet! :D

My apologies to you Tarrbot. I can be a douche at times when I feel as if my beliefs (and others such as Joe Nerve who seemed like he was being ganged up on for awhile there) are being ridiculed. I certainly have worn many different hats in this lifetime as far as diet and health (substance abuse which is a whole other thread for sure) so I am not in any position to judge anyone. I can only do what is right for me and attempt to respect others which works most of the time but didn't in this situation. I'm really sorry for that Tarrbot.

Worse things have happened, GK. I stepped back from the discussion and just decided to let it play out. It did and it was done.

I also can relate to the ganging up on concept and feeling like your back is to the wall and seeing someone else be dogpiled online. I've been on both sides of that game. I think they describe thermal underwear from some of my olden days battles online. Flame City, Population: Me (and the rest of the readers).

Anyway, no harm done. I have no problem with prostletyzing something you believe in, either. We all advocate for stuff we believe.

And for the sake of the other argument, I blame Zilic and Reltoid. :D

I would make the argument that the reason meat eaters have more health issues is because for the most part meat eaters work real jobs and have family's which causes wear and tear on the body and stress. Opposed to the average vegan that usually is going to phish shows with buddies well into their fifties and usually either work at non profit telemarketing organizations or making signs at trader joes. I hope this comment wasn't offensive.

Lol I'm a truck driver/crane operator.

I bet that Ziltoid guy is one of them frenchy, he'll surrender soon.

Well if you want to get technical, the French in Canada only surrendered once, right? They then proceeded to mercilessly kick our butts in Quebec just a few years later.
This is why I can respect the French (Canadiens).
On the other hand however....since everything bad in this thread is your fault, I accept your surrender. Now you have to start mailing me Canadian beers as a penalty. One a week for 15 weeks should be fine. Start with some of the darker beers, and slowly work your way up to the lighter stuff. Oh, and make sure you pack them really well. Any broken bottles will force me to issue further penalties.
