OK, everyone says "Craigslist is the worst way to find bandmates" and while I agree it can be the home of many flakes and can't do's, you can still find some gold if you're willing to take the time to separate the "Wheat from the chaff".
I had taken a bit of a hiatus from being in a band due to Wife and Kids. Last fall, I decided to start getting back into a band situation and put out an ad.
Found a killer female drummer through Craigslist (excellent timing and dynamics, great attitude, slim and nice to look at), but we ended up getting eventually derailed due to lack of suitable guitars. I told her I was going to just join an existing band and if the right situation came up, I would love to work with her again.
Posted another ad on Craigslist just offering my services as a bassist, got an email right back from a guy stating he needed a bass player; turns out it was an old buddy from elementary school, so I jumped at the opportunity. Played with his band for about 4 months until the drummer's wife in the rehearsal room started causing friction. Guitarist quit the band and I went with him. He said he needed to think about our next steps and we'd talk in a week.
Week later, tells me he's found a killer lead singer (22, female, gorgeous, fantastic voice, and a great lyricist to boot).
I quickly contacted the drummer to come play with us and she readily agreed. So now, band consists of female drummer, female lead singer, guitarist from my last band, and myself.
We had our first full band practice on Friday, unbelievable. We pretty much wrote 6 originals based upon the singer's lyrics and some scratch tracks the guitarist put together. It sounded like we had been playing the songs for WEEKS. Best first rehearsal with a band I've EVER had. Everyone was grooving as a unit and flowing seamlessly. As I put it, "I think we just put lightning in a bottle". We figure 4 or 5 more weeks to tighten all the screws and we're hitting open mic's to test the material. The singer has about 10 or 12 more songs she's written lyrics too, and that doesn't count all of the songs and ideas that I have back logged.
So after all that wall of text, moral of the story is Craigslist is a tool, if leveraged properly, can help you find your missing piece. Don't think its the be all and end all, but then no one way of finding band mates is ideal. Use all of them.
Oh, and I know the rules are no pics no female singer or drummer. Soon as we get some gig pics, I'll make sure to post them
