Songs that make you cry

You've Got A Friend -Donny Hathaway Live. This song gets me every time.

Waiting All Night- Phish. I was going thru something last year, this song reminded me of that thing, was hard to hear for a while, made me cry everytime I heard it...I'm over it , it's just a beautiful song now.

Not a crying tune, but everytime I hear Rush's "Hemispheres", the bassline right after the line, "thru the heart of Cygnus' fearsome force we set our course", this cool little walkup and down line makes the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Still...

MJ

Red Sector A by Rush has made me appreciate the fact that I have not had to experience tragedy on that level. The music is so....grey...just like the prison uniforms in the concentration camps. It is sterile and bleak....driving...sad. Regimented in time. "Fenced in" in a way. But through the middle break, Alex builds some tension with the way the guitar solo builds, and Niel as well with how the drum part builds up. It is setting s scene of desperate anticipation...perfectly leading up to the lyrics:

I hear the sound of gunfire at the prison gates
Are the liberators here?
Do I hope or do I fear?

I can just see the child clutching the fence and desperately looking around to see what is going to happen

Why Should I Cry For You by Sting - the whole song is stellar, but there is something about the way the lyrics, music and mood comes together in the last verse, led by the broken drum fill that builds tension and intensity to the second part of the song - where the lyrics are:
Dark angles follow me
Over a godless sea
Mountains of endless fog (fire?)
For all my days remaining
What would be true?

but then, the real tear jerker for me is when he sings:
Sometimes I see your Face - and then there is little guitar riff that answers that is so sad, longing feeling, and well placed in the structure that it just kills me
Stars seem to lose their place - the same little riff
Why must I think of you - same little riff
Why must I?
Why should I?
Why should I cry for you?
Why would you want me to?

that just gets me every time. I think on the album it is the song where he realizes what his father really meant to him, and how he realizes some bigger picture things about the loss. The whole song makes me dread losing my dad, and also makes me realize every thing that my dad has given me...every thing that he represents in my life.

The whole Soul Cages album is one of my most favorite by Sting. Great album to drum to, to play bass to, to sing to...and to cry to

...and not really a song, but i teared up when I got to see the Evens (with Ian MacKaye) live b/c he has been such a big influence on me. I couldn't believe we were in the same room. Even better was the hour long discussion after the place cleared out with him and Amy Farina. Got into Minor Threat in 82 and that whole scene shaped and defined my life

Wings for Marie gets to me. I know it's long, but I want to post the lyrics in entirety because I think they're that good.

Wings for Marie (part 1) •

You...
You believed ...
You believed in movements none could see.
You believed in me

A passionate spirit
Uncompromised
Boundless and open
A light in your eyes
Then immobilized.

Broken
Fell at the hands of those movements that I wouldn't see
Yet it was you who prayed for me.
So what have I done
To be a son to an angel?
What have I done
To be worthy?

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents
Difficult to see you in this light
Please forgive this selfish question, but
What am I to say to all these ghouls tonight?
"She never told a lie,
... well might have told a lie,
But never lived one.
Didn't have a life,
Didn't have a life,
But surely saved one."
See? I'm alright
Now it's time for us to let you go.

10,000 days (Wings pt. 2) •

Listen to the tales and romanticize,
How we'd follow the path of the hero.
Boast about the day when the rivers overrun.
How we rise to the height of our halo.

Listen to the tales as we all rationalize
Our way into the arms of the savior,
Feigning all the trials and the tribulations;
None of us have actually been there.
Not like you.

Ignorant siblings in the congregation
Gather around spewing sympathy,
Spare me.
None of them can even hold a candle up to you.
Blinded by choice, these hypocrites won't see.

But, enough about the collective Judas.
Who could deny you were the one who
Illuminated your little piece of the divine?

And this little light of mine, a gift you passed on to me;
I'm gonna let it shine to guide you safely on your way,
Your way home ...

Oh, what are they going to do when the lights go down
Without you to guide them all to Zion?
What are they going to do when the rivers overrun
Other than tremble incessantly?

High is the way, but all eyes are upon the ground.
You were the light and the way they'll only read about.
I only pray, Heaven knows when to lift you out.
Ten thousand days in the fire is long enough;
You're going home.

You're the only one who can hold your head up high,
Shake your fists at the gates saying:
"I've come home now!
Fetch me the spirit, the son, and the father.
Tell them their pillar of faith has ascended.
It's time now!
My time now!
Give me my, give me my wings!"

You are the light and way that they will only read about.

Set as I am in my ways and my arrogance,
(With the) burden of proof tossed upon the believers.
You were my witness, my eyes, my evidence,
Judith Marie, unconditional one.

Daylight dims leaving cold fluorescents.
Difficult to see you in this light.
Please forgive this bold suggestion, but
Should you see your Maker's face tonight,
Look Him in the eye, look Him in the eye, and tell Him:
"I never lived a lie, never took a life, but surely saved one.
Hallelujah, it's time for you to bring me home."

10,000 Days (Wings for Marie pt 2) by Tool.

I've NEVER heard anything so emotional and moving.

Also - Sullivan by Caroline's Spine. As a Veteran....it just gets to me.

It's not hard to reach back to the day
underneath an Iowa sun.
running to the tower of waterloo, looking
for the sullivan train to come.
His five boys would run to the top and
salute him as he went bye.
First we'd wave hello.
Then we'd wave goodbye.

It's not hard to reach back to the days
after the attack on Pearl.
Overnight my buddies turned into men, run-
ning out of time for games and girls.
The Sullivan boys were not overlooked
Uncle Sam calling each by name.
The very next day they left on a mystery
train.

Say goodbye, bye, bye, Mrs. Sullivan
don't you cry, cry, cry, cry, cry.
We regret to inform you
the Navy has taken your sons away.
So put your blue star in the window.

It's not hard to reach back to her smile,
when she received the letter.
The ltters, they sounded generally the
same it said: If they coudn't
be home, at least they were together on a
mighty fighting battleship,
somewhere in the south pacific.
The letters never got much more specific.

Say goodbye, bye, bye, mrs sullivan
dont you cry, cry, cry, cry, cry.
we regret to infrom you
the Navy is keeping your sons away.
All five, five, five, five.
So keep your blue star in the window.

It's not hard to reach back to the day
when the war finally came home.
Uncle Sam will send you a telegram, so he
doesnt have to tell you over the phone.
I heard she cracked up, when they found
out what the war had cost,
and all five of her boys were lost.

Say goodbye mrs sullivan
go ahead and cry.
We regret to inform you that all your sons
have passed away.
.....All five!
So change your blue star to gold.
