The O'Jay's "For The Love Of Money" the great Anthony Jackson, when he was 16 or so (or very young if not exactly 16) used a flanger and at the beginning some reverb.

Bootsy Collins uses envelope filter tones all over Parliament/Funkadelic.

"Funkify Your Life" George Porter, Jr., uses an envelope filter, recorded by The Meters. He also uses one briefly at the beginning of Robert Palmer's "Sneakin' Sally Through The Alley".

Larry Graham with Sly and the Family Stone uses fuzz on "Dance To The Music", it's double tracked though, he adds the fuzz bass track on top of the clean bass. He uses fuzz on a number of other tunes that I can't recall off the top of my head, too.

Any effects in particular you want to hear? Other folks have already mentioned Rage Against The Machine, Tool, and Muse, which are some of the heaviest bass-effect using bands out there.

I think that Cliff Burton used some FX in his stuff before Metallica.

Well, every single recorded song out there is going to have compression, so that's an easy one for starters.

Flea uses lots of effects, like filters and the like.

There is chorus all over the bass on songs in the 80s and 90s. One simple tune that comes to mind is "Come As You Are" by Nirvana. I used to cop that tone when covering that song by using a TC SCF set to flanger mode.

Tony Levin uses an Octaver on Sledgehammer.

The list is endless...
