Unless I missed it in this thread, no one has yet mentioned Chris Squire's use of effects in YES. Here are a few songs worth checking out:

Starship Trooper - tremolo (combined with fuzz toward the end)

Future Times/Rejoice - Eventide Harmonizer and Mutron III

The O'Jay's "For The Love Of Money" the great Anthony Jackson, when he was 16 or so (or very young if not exactly 16) used a flanger and at the beginning some reverb.
