Songs with "hooks" that don't work

I heard this song on the radio maybe a year ago, that kept repeating a line over and over that just wasn't up to snuff. Somebody thought it was a hook, and boy it sure wasn't. It popped into my head the other day and I wondered, could it have been as lame as I remember?

The answer is yes.

And the video is... ungood as well.

Are there any other songs that lean hard into a hook that won't set?

I found that not watching the video makes it easier to understand the musical logic, not that it’s really great or anything. The violence and the sound of the blows are not at all coordinated with music. The video imagery is extremely distracting, and to me rather disgusting which I suppose the whole point of the exercise. If that was what they were after, I say job well done!

Liliac got to a level of popularity for their covers, but their original material lacks barbs. They get closer to hooks than the OP song, but nothing that truly sticks. I’m aware of them because a friend occasionally sends me a track or an update. They seem to have a following so someone likes it more than I do. Here’s an example.

Yes! And Nightwish is right up there with them. Tuomas writes some great songs for NW.

As for the original post, a lot of American music doesn't hook me as much as bands from Europe, especially in the realm of symphonic metal. That kind of metal isn't typically popular in the US unless it is Trans Siberian Orchestra, and I love them too. I'm currently putting together a Christian rock band, and one of our guitarists made a statement that resonated with me.

He said he stopped going to see cover bands in local venues years ago because it seemed like every band played the same set as the band before them, and it got stale. He said it became like a "who could play it better" contest than an actual gig. I tend to agree. Those events don't hook me.
I've heard a lot about NW but haven't really listened yet. Plan on correcting that today.

Where are they from? Coastal California? Their videos have interesting settings, one is in an only in America town dump with boats and one is on a beach with huge driftwood dead trees. She is a flute player apparently, and the tallest person. I like her use of grit in the vocal. Though it was lilac, but the smell wasn't right, then I noticed the extra i. Never need to listen again though...
later- oh, a family band from Atlanta GA. I see the resemblance of the bass player and singer. And the town dump with boats, that's Atlanta fer sure.

That was a parody video, right? Right?

I think its just poorly produced. Slap stick sound effects from a underbudget B movie didn't help anything and the instrumentation sounds like it could have been mixed better. I think the hook could have been fine if those other things were addressed.
I would like to think it has the sound effects removed from the audio version.

Sorry, but the song smacks of trying too hard to be outrageous without any real feeling that they are. Like you actually believe someone like Amyl and the Sniffers are actually pretty outrageous in real life, but I don't believe it with this band. Plus the title should be a line in the song used once at the most, and better lyrics overall are needed.

Amy is a bogan badass, I wouldn’t want to mess with her, whereas this Hannah person looks like she just took some time off from her other job on the pole.
Amy would take the pole and hit you with it. Or shove it somewhere.

I suppose that the definition of 'Hardcore' music has changed... :(
I don't think that bad hooks are the root of the problem. I think it's the utter lack of authenticity on every level.

Considering the cost of this video, maybe sending her to at least one boxing lesson could have helped sell this drivel.

Ya, Amy's not acting. Hannah is so obviously acting. I think a requirement of being dirty enough for hard-core is looking like you've stunk at least once in your adult life. She ain't got no stank. Which is fine by me, but write music that actually suits your personality.
