    Hello Talkbass Hivemind,

I'm on a little bit of an academic hunt at the moment, searching for examples of songs that utilize slapping technique but NO popping. Anyone have suggestions?

    Thanks!

A poster put up a The Jamaica Boys track a few days back with Marcus on bass. It sounded like the whole line was on the thumb. Basically mimicking what a synth would do. I can't remember the title of the track though.

Mostly on the thumb, a nice tempo, harder than you think to stay in the swing:

Thanks for the replies all. Looking particularly for easy examples, things that someone brand new to the style could play along to given some practice. I've been writing my own examples, but nothing beats playing along to a song.

Doesn't sound like slapping with thumb only to me. There is much more happening.

"Take the Power Back" by Rage Against the Machine's main hook is all slap, no pop, and pretty easy on top of sounding cool.

:) ok no problem. Nice song anyway!! There are not so many slap songs with thumb only. Maybe the beginning of My Name is Mud (not easy though). lessons in Love is a good one, also not easy to play it in that speed.

I recorder this song more than 10 years ago. The part from 0:24 and on is all thumb. Recorded on a Gibson G-3 Grabber.

There are a few level 42 songs that fit. Another is "Eyes Waterfalling" - he gets into some pops eventually but they are ornamental and not crucial to the identity of the bassline or song.

Be warned, there's a rather long into on this song; it doesn't get started until about 1:30. But once it does it's quite a ride, more so when you consider Mark King is also singing.

I believe the slap parts in Young MC's "Bust a Move" (performed by Flea) are just slaps, no pops.
