Not sure how off-topic this was, but I have been thinking about music I grew up with as a child; I think it's interesting how musical taste develops. So here's one I remember:

I was in first grade and even just the sound of this song had me gaga! Ha!

This song was cool when I was 10 years old and nearly two decades later it's still hip. Actually played along with it for the first time yesterday. Surprising, considering i've played bass for 12 years.

As a small child the first song I must have paid attention to the lyrics to had to be Somewhere Over the Rainbow.

Or maybe it was Jingle Bells lol

All the Eurodance trash of the early 90s. It was like nothing else existed out there. I'm glad I'm not sitting in a corner muttering garbled text passages of "cotton eye joe" to myself 20 years later.

My mother has always been an Elvis fan. Dad loved the Everly Brothers, Buddy Holly, and Roy Orbison.
They both also loved Dean Martin.
So those were always playing at home.
Not a bad grounding, I guess.

My brother gave me a copy of Alice Cooper's early "Easy Action" for Christmas when I was 12 - I wasn't quite the same after listening to that the first time!

A couple of rough versions of half-remembered old Scottish tunes that my mom sang to me as lullabies (didn't really remember anything other than the melodies, had to look them up):

and then when I was 8 years old...

BAM! Game over...

I clearly recall, when I was about 5 or 6 years old, standing on the hump in the back of my dad's car, my arms and head reaching into the front seat and listening to the AM car radio. That was when I realized that a lot of music on the radio were "love songs" and that my parents listened to a lot "beige" music on the radio and on vinyl at home...and from those experiences, I remember thinking music generally sucked.

When I was 10, I got KISS Alive II for Christmas. That changed my thinking!!!

That said, two songs stuck in my head from those days- Spinning Wheel by BS&T and I am Woman by Helen Reddy. Definitely not "love songs"!!!

haha Barry White, good stuff. Yea, idk, I remember listening to that when I was 6 (so like '90). It's funny to me how there's literally no sense of discrimination in music as a child. If something's good, it simply is.
