Double Bass Sorry.. Another 'what string' thread

I play electric bass mainly, have a cheaper ply/solid top bass, I've only been playing about on it, it currently has the shipping 'strings' on it.. Horrible bloody things.

I want to play pizz style jazz.. That's it, no arco at all.

Seeing it's a cheapo bass I don't want to spend big money on strings, what is a good affordable string that's not going to sound like bits of electrical wire?! I can't really specify any influences.. About the only upright players I listen to are Esperanza spalding and Scott lefaro. I like the way they sound!

Helicore Hybrids are a good inexpensive string. They're reasonably priced in the US, though not sure how they compare to other brands in Melbourne. You could try those or Thomastik Spirocores, which may be more expensive but are pretty standard for jazz.

Esperanza uses spirocores; weich gauge, I think. Scotty was a gut guy.

Buy a used set of spirocores and be done with it.

There is plenty of info here so do a search for more info on the characteristics of various strings.

Thanks, actually TOO much info on here! I'm not really up with most of the terminologies used.. It's all pretty confusing.

Thanks.. so after you guys mentioned spiros.. bit of searching about the, looks like they are 'standard' some what? Not the cheapest, not the most expensive, not the best, not the worst.. but a good honest string?!

+1 for what Marcus said. Just get some Spiros and be done with it.

Otherwise, just check the classifieds often (and run an advanced search only in the classifieds for "spirocore", "spiros", "spirocores".. you never know, there might be at least partial sets listed a few pages back.
