No... it means you let the oxygen in thus completely ruining the cable beyond any other use but to tie down your gear when traveling.

Speaker cables are usually thicker.

Anyway, I wouldn't worry about it. I used an instrument cable instead of a "speaker" cable for 20 years until I joined here and nothing happened. I didn't even have any clue there was such a thing.

Don't know from personal experience but when i first got my SWR Basic 350 a local amp guy warned me to not use anything but a speaker cable to connect it to a speaker. He said SWR amps could be damaged if you used an instrument cable so i never used one. That head lived in an SKB hard case from day one (and still does) and all the cables required out the back side (plus spares) lived in the back end of the case so there was never any forgotten cables or the wrong cable pulled out of my equipment bag.

I have made my own speaker cables with SO, or SJ cable, so there would be no labeling, I would know, but if they ended up in another musicians hands they might not !
I agree with the "I like Speakon cables " statement.

12 ga. is best for home defense and speaker cables, intimidating Add real Neuritic speakons and you can thrown away the soldering iron, heat shrink, etc. and the connector has strain relief that will never fail a fat round rubber SJ000x. Under a buck a ft. for SJ at Home Depot and you can always have the right length.

The only drawback to this type of cable is it's a PITA to strip the rubber case back without nicking the wires. I bend it sharply, then just nick the outer casing with a razor knife and the case splits, continue until it splits to expose some of the conductor insulation and stop. Rotate the cable and repeat on another section. There's probably a proper tool for it if I can ever remember to ask when in the store.

I use a small wrap of yellow electrical tape to mark my speaker cables - wrapped around the black cable near the connector ends...easy to see
and quick to identify during set up.

Just for the record , I have several instrument cables that are not labeled. I also have a couple of speaker cables that are not labeled. The speaker cables that are not labeled are pretty old. A couple of the instrument cables that are not labeled are only a few years old. If you have a labeled cable , you are in good shape and it's pretty hard to mess things up. If not labeled , I have always been able to tell them apart by unscrewing the end and looking at them. I only know one guy that fried an amp by using an instrument cable for a speaker cable. I have however heard several stories about that happening and have no reason to doubt them. I have personally experienced a lot of unwanted noise by using a speaker cable for an instrument cable.

They're also typically labeled Instrument or Speaker in multiple places along the length of the cable.

Our guitar tech makes them up, Sets em up, We use em up! ~ Thank GOD for that. Ours have no print I.D. I can't tell em apart!??!

Easy for me: my speaker cable is blue and short, my instrument cables are black and long.

It occurs to me that my cables have never been mixed.

The instrument cables are kept in the gig bag and the speaker cables are kept in the accessories case, with the mains lead.
