Sound differences between KT-88 and 6550 ?

I think the KT-88s give more bottom whilst the 6550s are a tad more hifi. Not entirely sure, so I'm about to test it. I'm gonna swap the original tubes in my Peavey Classic 400 from the so-and-so 6550s to Genalex Golden Lion KT-88s.

I've played a lot of tube amp but I really don't know the difference between a KT88 and a 6550. Can an amp designed to work with 6550's be fitted with KT88's. What adjustments have to be made to the amp? Is it really a good idea to substitute one power tube for another?
