Sounding off

Hello, as a new member I have a question that hopefully will put me on the right path. I own both a Fender J bass and the P bass. I happen to have owned them both for awhile. And was content with the way they both sounded. However, on one occasion my instructor (at the time) asked me if he could use my J bass, and began to adjust the knobs. After that is was as if I was playing a whole new bass. My J bass came alive. You know that (Fender growl)! On the other hand, it doesen't seem to matter what adjustments I make on my P bass it doesnt growl like my J bass. Sonically speaking, is that one of the things that seperate the two?
Thanks. :)
