Soundtech powered subwoofer ?

i used to work for a music store that was a soundtech dealer. seems like they have dropped off of the map. either way they were pretty low tech back then even.

for the price i can't say that it's a rip off but i would probably look else where.

while i have no experience with them i have heard really good reviews of these for cheap powered subs

do you already have powered tops?

the reason i ask is that while i would like powered speakers also for ease of setup, you can get some great deals on non-powered if you keep your eyes open. i found a pair of Peavey SP118 subs on my local craigslist for 500 bucks/set a while back and they work great. prices on lightweight amps are also coming down.

What he said. You can get a heckuva deal locally on non-powered subs....too big and expensive to ship. Okay, what to do for power? You can pick up a used 1400 - 2400 watt lead sled for $200-350 if you keep check on the classifieds. Run it in bridged mono and you'll meet 99% of your needs

best to avoid bridging if possible. it's really easy to overpower cabs that way unless you are really careful.

i'm using QSC GX5s for my subs and tops. i have two which each run an 8 ohm load off of each channel for 500 watts per box. the amps were less than 400 each and sound great. yes i could put a few more watts into my speakers but the gain would not be much. another advantage is that they have a crossover built in if you want to keep it simple, i run a separate active crossover however for flexibility

also it's well worth looking at the new Peavey IPR line. the first in the series has been out for a few months and is getting great reviews from Pro Audio folks. and it only weighs in at 7 pounds or something which is obviously awesome.


a good place for more in depth discussion of these things in the pro audio board at harmony central. i've gotten lots of good advice over there.

A 1400 will give 1400 watts into a 4 ohm load (2 X 8 ohm enclosures) or 700 watts per box which is not unrealistic. You're right, you have to be careful. Bridging is the most efficient method for getting the most out of a power amp / single 8 ohm enclosure configuration.

what do you mean by a 1400? are you talking about a qsc model 1400? if so then your information is not correct. i own one that i used to use for powering my stage monitors. the documentation for that amp states that the minimum load for bridge operation is 8 ohm at which point it puts out 600 watts. that series of amps also do not have clip limiters, and therefor you run a pretty big risk of blowing something up if you get carried away. this is why i retired mine from monitor duty. modern amps with limiters are a much better choice.

Sorry, its actually an RMX 1450. I have the bad habit of using the term "1400's" to describe any amp in that general power range, including my Crest CA-6

It does have the aforementioned clip protection (also limited via a DriveRack) and spec'd to do 4 ohm bridged, plus we're using them in low-stress applications. I've had no stability issues with the QSC RMX's and I'm using 3 in the rack.
