Source Audio C4 as Phaser/Octave/Chorus?

I'm making a small board (Pedaltrain Nano+) because I haven't been using bass effects much for the last several years. Currently I have Peterson SS Mini Tuner > 3leaf Wonderlove > OvniFX Smoothie > Dr. Scientist The Elements > ?

I have 1 spot on the board left, play stinky funk and metal for the most part when it comes to using effects. The effects I'm pretty sure I would actually use would be a bass synth, an octave, a phaser, and maybe a chorus. But, alas, only 1 spot and I am not interested in expanding.

So the question, can the Source Audio C4 be used as a phaser, chorus, and octave? I believe I know the answer to chorus and octave (yes), but phaser I'm not so sure. Any experiences?

I’m currently running my C4 alone into a Bergantino super pre. It handles the octaves and phaser duties very well. I’ve heard okay chorus settings on it , but don’t really use chorus much at all. I think you’ll be pretty happy going with it. On a side note , I’m going to add an Eventide H9 to the board. That should leave all bases well covered !

This is not a bad idea, I've been avoiding the Zoom MS60B because I think it sounds not very good. Not sure what the H9 has for synths, but I'm assuming it has them and maybe a better option than the C4 for my last spot!

I love my H9, and it does almost everything well, but I definitely don't love the synths on it, especially when you're familiar with how good the tracking is on the Source Audio stuff.

I basically use my H9 as my "do everything" pedal since I only use a small board, and I supplement it with pedals which cover its (very few) weak spots. I use a Source Audio Spectrum for filters and octaves. I LOVEEEE the Spectrum octave feel and sound (which is the same as the C4), and the phasers also sound phenomenal.

I think you could sort of loosely approximate some chorus with the Spectrum/C4, but that's not quite its thing. Its phasers and octaves are killer, though.

I barely ever use chorus outside of occasionally messing around with it, so that's actually the lowest priority. I also always think I'll set up a bunch of presets on a multi, but then never really do. Can't really stand menus and computers, etc. I understand the C4 requires it too, but once I have 6 presets in, its all knobs and buttons from there which I can do. Going to go with the C4, thanks!

Synth, phase and a chorus sounding modulation are certainly possible and very effective for bass, you might even be able to replicate the Wonderlove with the C4 [iirc there are some patches in Neuro already]. The C4 can even double as a comprehensive distortion pedal.

C4 is a great octaver and I like a lot of the envelope settings. Maybe you can get close.

That's awesome. That's basically how I use the Spectrum too. The computer editing software is where a lot of the power of this thing lies, but once you have your 6 presets that you're happy with, then it's basically set it and forget it.

Chorus is usually a delay-based effect (with an LFO modulating the speed of the delay line which causes the pitch to wobble against the blended in clean tone), and the C4 doesn’t have a delay engine. It can do detune sounds that can get into chorus territory though by either creating static detune (putting two voices a couple of cents out of tune with each-other using the Detune knob in each synthesized voice) and/or adding LFO modulation to that Detune control in one of the voices. Unfortunately the Detune option is only available for the synth and other pitch-tracking voices and not for clean input voices, so your detuned/modulated voice will have to be a synth voice to use the detune option. I haven’t tried to make a “clean” chorused sound with my C4 yet

I have a C4 and recently added a H9 max - utter overkill really!! It’s interesting hearing them side by side as the C4 sounds raw and analogue and the H9 polished and produced sounding.
