I see a lot of builders utilizing spacers between their top and body wood , are those colored veneers or vulcanized fiber sheet ? I searched online and I found fish paper and vulcanized fiber sheet but don't know if that's what I need or not .I want to laminate some black and white spacers in this neck I'm building , it's a neck thru so the material would have to be on a roll I guess . Thanks .

I haven't seen anyone use fish paper, nor do I know what that is. From what I've read people use dyed veneers in between layers of wood.

They are probably dyed wood veneers. Search a site like Certainly Wood and see if you can find what you want. They will come rolled loosely for shipping but it's best to store them flat once you get them.

I believe what you want is called "purfling" and I was looking for a supplier of this stuff myself a while ago (for my next build):

I noticed that those purflings are 6" wide. Is there another source for wider material or is it all like that? I would be concerned that when you butt them up there would be an obvious seam. I didn't notice any pics here that showed that area, and I'm assuming it's not an issue, but it does kind of concern me. Does the seam kind of just go away when it's all glued up?

Purfling refers to accents that are inlayed around the edge of an instrument. Most of what you see on electric instruments is just a veneer laminate that gets revealed in a way that looks similar to purfling when the body edges are shaped.

Hey thanks for all the replies I had forgotten about this thread . Yes Brett Zeppelin , that's exactly what I was looking for but doesn't seem safe to glue between lams in a neck .they also use it in knife handles to accent wood . I had already decided to use dyed veneers but thanks for the help any way . Wood to wood , can't go wrong with that .

b/w like a 3-ply pickguard? plastic takes to epoxy very well just sand the surfaces first & you can combine plastic & wood using proper epoxy + hardener not cheap crap

I would not recommend using plastic layers in a neck. Beyond any tone wood arguments, the plastic is likely to creep over time, giving you a bowed neck.

that's true i wasn't paying attention. What materials are black and white to use as stringers for a neck I don't know

Yeah I'm just going to stick to wood veneer it seems to be the safest way to go . I'll probably just use dyed veneer because the ebony and holly are way out of my price range .

If you troll the specials section you can get some light colored veneers that will work well as accents for really cheap. For black you will want to use dyed or wenge can be had for $3/sf. The dyed black veneer is great stuff though.
