Speaker farting only when in cab... Weird

Okay, bumping this.

The noise got worse and worse until the offending speaker was noticeably cooked, even when I take it out. Now...

How the heck do I go about replacing the speaker? Should I replace both in the bottom compartment? I know that there is no way that I will ever find an exact replacement.

The speaker says G-12-16 on it. I believe that they are all 70watt 16ohm speakers and the impedance rating on the cab is 8ohm but reads 4.6 on the meter.

I can't find bass speakers anywhere. Any suggestions? Anyone have anything laying around that might work? The thing is vintage from the 70s.

I could get a cheap Marshall 4x12 cabinet from long and McQuade and rip the speakers out of it but I'm afraid that I won't get the same quality.

No brand name on the speaker? Seems like a guitar speaker (not bass) with the "G"
You could have that speaker re-coned. Or just buy another 12 inch, 16 ohm 70 watt guitar speaker

If you have 4 ohms, all the speakers are wired in parallel.

I would think the stock wiring is two speakers in parallel to each jack, yielding two 8 ohm loads.

So I don't think there is anything up with the head. The speakers are almost 50 years old.

When you say have it checked, do you mean to make sure that the proper wattage is being sent to the cabinet?

Also, couldn't the fact that it's a guitar speaker have anything to do with it? This should be a bass speaker no? Isn't it a miracle that it lasted this long?

Honestly, I would replace all of the drivers with fresh, new ones. I have no affinity for old worn-out crap vintage gear.

This will, however, require plugging the cab dimensions into a modeling program to find drivers with suitable Thiele/Small parameters.

It is worn out crap. Lol. I don't care for vintage speakers, but I've put all the work into the cab and I don't want to spend all the money on replacing all of the speakers. My wife would kill me. So I want to replace them as they croak.

If there is D.C. offset or some oscillation present, it can damage speakers. That's why I mentioned checking the amp. It may be fine, but that's a guess.

Roger that. Lord knows I understand financial and domestic constraints. :cool:

The trade-off is that running a cab full of mismatched speakers is going to (at best) sound crappy, or even (at worst) accelerate the demise of your remaining drivers.

Bring your head to your local Long & McQuade and try it with a working cabinet. You can make a proper decision after eliminating or confirming that the head is the cause.
Edit..use a Traynor cab as they're built, rented and sold by L&M themselves and if you make it smoke they won't get upset.

IF their is an issue with the head, and the head damages another cabinet, you might want to know about their policy of "if you break it you bought it" before hand.
