Speaker or Crossover

Just started having intermittent problem with Blackwidow 18 in Peavey 1820 cab. My amp drives the 10's when I connect to the Bi-Amp Hi port. I get about 4 ohms through the 18 itself. Infinite resistance when I connect the meter to the cable coming from the crossover.

I took the Black Widow apart to see if there was junk between the coil and magnet (that happened before when the filter came apart). Was very clean.

Just connected the 18 directly to my amp. No problems

I used DeoxIT on the cable from the crossover bare ends to the 18 and the spring loaded connector. No visible corrosion there to begin with.

The cab seems OK now when I connect the amp to the crossover. Will continue testing before taking it anywhere.

Any knowledge about that crossover?

Will remove the crossover to see if the cable from the 18 to it has a connector to it or if it is hard wired.

The 18 is ported. The 10's are in a compartment. Do not appear to be ported.
 
First, keep DeOxit or ANY spray away from the speakers and speaker wiring. I don't care what YouTube or wannabe-tech.com says.

the first thing to do is cycle a plug into the low and high inputs a couple of times, that will likely solve the problem without creating new problems.
 
LOL, I guess the wannabe was on this site. I made sure to mask the speaker cone before spraying. The wire to the 18 from crossover has bare ends that go into the spring loaded connector that's on the speaker. What's the problem w/DeoxIT? Fire hazard at the connector? What would you recommend if there was corrosion there? (besides cleaning with a wire brush? Is that DeoxIT bad for everything?
 
It's not a solution to the problem. IF there really is corrosion on the wire ends, the proper way to repair this is to cut back and strip. Do not solder the wires.

DeOxit gets onto surfaces and into places it doesn't belong (including anywhere on a speaker). It's way overused as a "miracle cure all spray" and often causes more problems.

BTW if you tried measuring resistance of the leads from the crossover that would normally connect to the 18" (18" disconnected) infinite or "OL" on a multimeter this will be normal in most all cases. Most all will rely on the natural frequency roll-off of the largest driver. The crossover will be used to protect the smaller drivers from frequencies that would be destructive to them. Not required the the large driver. I would not expect to see "porting" on the 10" as low frequencies are not fed to them.

Not in the case of this Peavey crossover.
 
At first I was not getting a clean connection to the 18 while plugged into the Low jack on the crossover, or through the crossover. Clean plugged into the Hi Jack. I had already plugged in and out into all the jacks on the crossover several times. Seems fine now. That cab can sit in a closet for a year at a time. I recently used it at an outdoor gig. I am going to use it at home for practice and see what develops. Like I said the problem was intermittent. Sounds great at low volume playing with acoustic musicians. Almost a Double Bass like tone.
