speaker question

I've been doing a lot of research and I'm about to start building a custom 2x10 bass cab and I was wondering about the speakers to use.
I've heard some people speak highly of using speakers you would put in a car(sub woofers) and slappin on a tweeter.
Seems to me like that wouldn't work too well.
If that is a horrible option what's the best 10" driver I can get for my money?

yeah I fugured car subs would no work well. was thnking of EV 10s actually. awesome
With response that drops like a cliff below 100Hz EV10s (EVM10DLX) are not well suited at all for electric bass. For a build worth undertaking you need to do quite a bit of research, including reading at least one book on loudspeaker design, and learning how to use a modeling software program, like WinISD Alpha Pro, so that you can accurately predict what any driver is capable of from a given cabinet.

I'd say you should just look up a good bass cabinet manufacturer and buy some of their replacement speakers and just build a box around those.
-100. 99% of drivers come from driver manufacturers, not speaker manufacturers, and most of those are from Eminence. As for building a box around anything, the knowledge required to do so and get a worthwhile result is considerable. If you don't think that's the case a look at this should change your mind:

Isn't it true that the speakers used for car audio applications will basically not be able to have the transient response ability to effectively recreate bass guitar tone (as a standalone cabinet)?

I looked into building my own cabinet in a very detailed way and did tons of research....and in the end, I ended up realizing that buying a used high-end cabinet (or mid-level quality cab)...and I mean a loaded cab....was a much more cost-effective option...and the quality was good.

I ended up buying a used 2x10 G-K cab (w/tweeter) for about 200 bucks on Craigslist. Very happy with it.

My 2 cents,
