Speaker recommendation

Hi All. I have an unknown built 1x15 with an 8olm 200watt Celestion in it. Dont know which Celestion as it is at church and haven't pulled it. Currently using it as and extension cab with my Ashdown Mag300T 2x10 combo.

I am thinking of getting a CarvinBX500 and don't have money for cabs. I most likely will bring that Ashdown home and place the new amp on the 1x15 for now. I will need to upgrade the speaker I am sure and so far am thinking of this:

Here is a bad pick of the current rig with the cabinet. It has ports on either side of the speaker and I guess sounds pretty good. Don't have enough experience to say whether it is a good cab or not. My buddy that is a pro bassist said it sounded pretty good to him when hooked solo to my Ashdown. Eventually I will pair it up to a good 2x10 or just get a quality 4x10, but that will be quite sometime. Can any help me find a speaker that will work good with this cab and that amp? I am looking for an somewhat old school sound with solid clean bottom and some punch. As much as I can get on this budget anyways. Thanks all.

i don't know your speaker's design or dimensions, but i'd recommend an Eminence Kappalite 3015 over that speaker. it has more power handling, is lighter weight and has more high end and is less money. IMO, a speaker that only goes up to 3K is going to sound muddy without a mid or high end driver.

I do like the 3015, but another possibility is the Eminence Delta Pro 15A which has greater bandwidth than the 3015 but not as much x-max. Depending on the anticipated power handling requirements, the Delta Pro might be a more cost-effective choice.

With a Carvin BX500 you're going to be pushing close to (potentially) the bounds of where a 15a would bottom out and a 3015 would be pushed pretty hard. I'd go with the 3015 - it's not much pricier via Beachaudio or Speakerhardware (about 30 bucks more).

That said, if you're going to make that single 15 work in a band situation you're going to want to angle it up or get a amp stand for it. The layout of it is such that it's not going to hit your ears much in a bigger room and you'll just keep turning it up until it pops or sounds like crap.

I would consider instead of replacing the 15 which will cost you at least a hundred bucks, if you want to maximize your volume, you buy the Carvin combo instead of the BX500 - there's a BX500 combo version that comes with a 2x10 that's pretty well liked.

The BX510n combo is about the same price as a 3015 + the Carvin BX500, and will be louder combined with what you have (as you can run the Carvin at any ohm setting necessary to power both cabs).

D'oh! I overlooked that he said Carvin BX500. That's 300 watts into 8 ohms; I'd have to model that speciifc cab to see where we'd stand with the Delta Pro excursion-wise. Depends on the internal volume and tuning.

This question pops up enough where people should realize they need to at least post measurements of their cabinet to get any good advice if they're considering anything other than an OEM replacement.

If it's a temporary solution, why throw money at it? Use that to purchase the cab you really want.

As I said the 1x15 is a temp solution for now until I can pick up a used Eden 4x10 or something like it. Just want a more modular setup.

You would do better off with the Carvin 2x10 combo still IMHO. The 2x10 + 1x15 will be way louder than a 3015 + Carvin Bx500 by itself, pretty much guaranteed. Most celestion drivers used for bass are quite loud, just limited by excursion, but with 2 10" drivers to share the load I think you'd be more than fine.

Then when you're ready to get another set of cabs, you sell the empty combo and the 1x15, and you'll be positive more money than if you'd just had the 1x15 by itself with a 3015 in it.

i understand your situation, and IMO, there's nothing wrong with that at all. i'm sure that you'd be happy with a 3015 in your cab.

Looks similar, but the covering, handles, and porting is a little different. I am gonna break it open this weekend and see if I can reveal what it is. I actually bought from a dude on TB last year so I will see if i can get a hold of him as well.

Thanks for the lead though, that is a starting point.
