Speakers and Sub options for home practice space?

Looking for speakers and sub for in-home practice space.

Quick background: I have a fairly soundproofed room in a detached house and want to use my Hart Dynamics electronic kit as the drum set. I find the lower volume makes for a stronger practice (as well as being easier on the ears).

My current PA system consists of:

Mackie Onyx 1640
4 x 31-band dbx EQ (on AUX channels)
Dual dbx compressor
dbx Driverack PA
rackmount CD player
TC Electronics M300

2 Mackie SRM350 (currently used on the floor for AUX monitor wedges).

Initially thinking of adding 2 speakers on poles and a single subwoofer (to help the electronic drums, I have plenty of bass amp already), keep the SRM350s for personal monitor mixes (lead singer, me ), and the others can listen to the "FOH" mix.

So, here go the questions...

1. Should I keep using active speakers/sub or go with passive boxes and 2 power amps (1 L+R for speakers, 1 bridged mono for sub)?

2. Any recommendations on good sounding stuff. I don't want/need anything too huge (power or size). I am looking for good sound, not huge watts (if we needed bigger stuff for gigs I would just rent it).

3. Initially looking at options from Mackie and Yorkville, would be willing to entertain other recommendations.

I would say in your case you would be better off staying with active cabs.
I would say a single 15" active sub would do the trick with ease for your application, seeing how you mentioned Yorkville I would take a look at the LS720P it seems like it would be perfect for your application.

Much to my surprise, that's a pretty nice sounding rig with plenty of balls. Simple to set up as well (much nicer than active tops).

Consider Yamaha Club Series too... passive but flexible and not too expensive.

I'd go active, but there are plenty of compelling arguments for both options.

Why are you looking for subs for a practice space? Not needed. In fact, I would think the two monitors you already have would suffice for a practice space.

I'm a big Yamaha and Yorkville fan. Mackie is overpriced and not your best value.

Was thinking the drummer might like the sub since I plan to utilize a Hart Dynamics kit in the rehearsal space.

I suspect larger mains would be fine too; however, I was thinking if I used a sub I could go with smaller mains.

Unless your rehearsal space is huge, that low end can pile up very quickly even without subs.

Thats good advice. The room will be 12x25 so not too huge. Maybe I will just start with a good pair of active mains then see how it sounds. That might be more than enough. Can always add the sub later if there seems to be a requirement.
