Need a good place to spec out and price speakers for bass amp construction.

Not saying I will ever build my own, but would love to do the research.

I have downloaded several programs to model the cavity, now its time to take the next step and start looking at real world values.

The contract with my employer. Anything I design they have first right of refusal. Building a prototype / working unit would make it very difficult for me to do anything with it if I ever leave the company. Best to keep math and block diagrams to myself until then. Sad, but such is life...

Katy is on the outskirts of Houston. There's at least one big defense contractor outfit down there, probably more in addition to direct gov't. employment. Maybe this guy works on sound cannons or something.

He signed an agreement. Just like you might to not share proprietory secrets with the competition or even work for the competition for a number of years. It's not big brother it's business. Put yourself in the business's shoes.
Some one develops something or takes something developed there and goes off to make a fortune. This business could be a very small company.
Teachers often sign these contracts when in the private sector.
He said if he built it "now" it would be difficult to develop it "later".

Working on the Brown Note Of Mass Destruction Bomb eh?

I have experimented with the "brown note" and settled on the following to make a super uncomfortable noise to get the bowls stirring:

Using cool edit (or something similar) generate a 20 Hz tone on the left, 17Hz tone on the right (giving a 3 Hz beat frequency between the two). Then reverberate the noise around 30% as if it was a hall.

Then all you need is some pretty huge subwoofers to make the noise (ideally, get a competition car stereo to play the noise as it is such a small volume, you get big SPL at low frequency). Most bass amps wont do it as the frequency is too low. Try on headphones too - it makes you feel a little wierd...

Many, many years ago I worked for a government defense contracted company for a few years and our government has and still is working with a lot of different waves so it was just a guess. Anyway BeJay, I hope you find some of the above links/info helpful.

I was rather surprised at the cost of some of the speakers.

I found a thread that poster used a small MCM speaker and I have started looking at those.

This "concept" is a battery powered 30W amp driving a 12" driver in a ported tuned enclosure. The MCM has the price point vs XMax and power limits I was looking for.

Working the math for li vs pb with associated charging circuits right now.

Im leaning towards pb since price point is a trade off for weight gain.

I’m a battery powered bass amp enthusiasts too, and I like the new super powerful lightweight killer tone bass rigs - BTW, I remember years ago when Eminence, Allied Radio Shack, and etc were considered really cheap and bad sounding drivers and now Eminence is considerer one of the leaders - times have and are changing. IE - the mainstream use to seek the best in HiFi sound and now most people are more than happy with little MP3 players and many things are built overseas or in the USA with inferior or even counterfeit parts. And now some “TB” bassist are using/wanting 3 & 4-way PA type loudspeakers instead of good bass guitar cabinets. Oops, I’m starting to Rant - so I’ll stop now. Anyway BeJay, good luck and have fun with your studies, pricing, and building.

Big +1 on the MP3 thing. There's an entire generation coming up that has no idea what real quality sound is. Their baseline is earbuds or horribly unbalanced car audio systems. When this becomes the expected sound, a really good system may not even "sound right" to these people.
