I've been exclusively using Speakon cables for over 10 years now and would recommend them everyone.

When I read the OP my first thought was fault in the amp, not the cables.

Take the amp to a tech.

there's a reason outside the US banana plugs and quarter inch speaker cables are banned ... they catch on fire if the amp overheats ... speakons, to my knowledge don't... my two cents

The reason 1/4" connections are not allowed on amps that can produce over 35 volts peak referenced to ground is because if the shock safety legislation (in the EU it is the Low Voltage Directive, in the US and Canada it's based on UL/CSA 60065). It's not specifically for overhrating or fire, though that can factor into the qualification of the parts.

Cool. When the power section goes silent (protect mode), does the front-end preamp still function. IOW, is it still "seeing" signal, are you able to clip it by goosing the gain?

For kicks 'n giggles, run a 1/4" plug in & out of the effects loop send & return jacks...I'll assume you have nothing in the loop at the moment. For that fact, just leave a 1/4 >< 1/4 signal cable plugged into both FX jacks.
