So as best I can tell, that rules out the Rebops and NS2s and only leaves me with some really expensive and hard to find used American made P/J combos and a very inexpensive discontinued Korean model that has a J/Soapbar layout. Am I missing something?

Why does that rule out the Rebops and NS-2s??
You can swap the DC/TW soapbar pickups with 40P5 and 40J and you have a P/J combo.
I'd go for a Rebop 5 and do the swapping.

Seriously, this 5 string obssesion is what's killing me - I have a REX5 that I love and I'd like to get another Spector (used in mint condition) for about $1000 give or take a couple hundred bucks. But it has to be a 5 string and I don't want another Spector with soapbars.

Those weren't my words My personal preference is 5 strings so I never really felt the need to own a 4 string but this was for my daughter.

You could always swap out the soapbars with EMG 40P and 40J pickups. They will be a direct swap since they look like a standard humbucker pickup but inside, they have P and J pickups so that will get you what you are looking for. You can do that with your Rex or you can do it with another bass like a Euro or Rebop you are looking at.

Also consider that the Rex has the EMG BT circuit and EMG HZ pickups which are passive so a Euro 5 will have a tonepump and EMG CS-TW's or possibly EMG DC's. There will definitely be a difference in tone between the two but it's just another option along with using P and J pickups as well.

It's an old performer. Entry level, but not bad if you compare it to other entry level basses. Same as the old ns2000B I believe.

Yup....NS2000B...I have one.....not a bad little bass. I paid $100 at GC, but the finish had some pretty big chips and it was pretty filthy overall.

So you guys prefer the NS-2A's over the Euro's? I am curious since I was looking at this for my daughter since I have started teacher her some things but, like her father, she is becoming a 5 string snob (those were Sam's words, lol.)

I'm with LoEnd My CR4FM (with tonepump) and my Euro 4LX are my prefered basses over a NS2A... in fact I sold off my NS2A because it couldn't keep up with my CR4FM Still a great bass tho!

If I had a choice between an NS-2A, a CR4FM, or a 4LX, I have no doubt that I would choose the CR4FM. That is the first Spector I ever played and would love to add one to the collection someday!

As a Spector newbie, this is all very enlightening to me. I have a lot of catching up to do. I've been deep in Rickenbacker and Gibson world for some time now. I love those basses. They're my rock and roll machines. But even with this humble NS-2A, I keep asking myself - What took so long? LOL! I've admired Spectors forever. From Gene Simmons to Sting... I guess part of it was, I used Guild Pilots for over a decade, which had the light weight, EMG powered, USA made thing covered well enough. Then I went "all organic" around 2004. No more active stuff, and nothing that didn't say Ric, Gibson, Fender, or Guild on the headstock. But these basses are true works of ART!

So how do I get one of those snazzy Spector Club ID numbers?

The NS4/NS5CRFM are the best non-US made Spectors IME. I've had 2 of the former and 1 of the latter and yeah, they're awesome.

Yeah, I did also. This thing is kind of neat and has some great effects to bring out the wood of the Spector's.

I've owned a euro4lx, various legends, a beat up reBop, an ns2a and this ns4crfm I have now is my favorite of all of them. I've yet to own a USA Spector, but one day I will.

My NS4CRFM has the solid wings of a US, and the same neck profile as my older NS-2. Definitely my favorite of all the non US Spectors I've played....

It should be solid then.....the sandwich came later in the 2000's...

So Spector brothers, i'm faced with a dilemma. My bass has a few battle scars that I was going to have fixed up. After pondering on that idea, I thought maybe I should just get her refinished. Truth is, i'm not a black bass kinda guy (no, i'm not a bacist lol,) but i'm finding it hard to justify doing that to such a rare finish option....so I was told. I can't see myself playing anything but a Spector, and the ssd era is now truly my favorite. So here's my question. Should I just refinish the bass to my likings, or trade this bass for a similar nscrfn in a different finish? I can't imagine finding one will be easy though.

Yeah, great looking bass, a bit much coinage. Maybe if it was dead mint. Don't think the seller really wants to sell it.
