SPECTOR® Club - Part 62

True, I thought that it would affect my playing but the difference is really not noticeable and the correct tension actually makes it easier to play with the fact that you can drop the action to make up for it also, you soon forget that you are playing a larger guage.

I expect if you're a finger player it could make difference that way in terms of plucking.

I'm actually considering moving up to the 142 CK balanced set from 136. I think I need a little more resistance for the way I pick. Right now on the fast stuff it feels like I'm pushing/pulling the string too much with my attack.

I play fingerstyle and I feel like I have better control, On the rebop 5 I have a 150 for the low string and then a .106 balanced set. That is set for drop A if I need it. I use the .142 set on the 4 for C# standard works great. I use a pick here and there and can see where the extra tension would help.

Just checking in again to see if there are any of you Spector users with the Core Piezo bass and your thoughts on it. Fretless preferable but mainly interested in the neck ( width at nut and thick/thinness of neck ) Is is a jazz like narrowness and thinness? C or D shaped neck?

How do you like the Piezo pickup? Do you usually use a blend of the two? Does the piezo by itself sound much like a plugged in acoustic? I can't find any stores in Chicago that have one and I'd like to hear some feedback before ordering one. Thanks if anyone could answer me.

I too have had an interest in the Coda Pro. This review tells me a couple things I expected........for me. I would most likely want to change the pickups and do an active passive pre.........just my two cents. I am also very interested in the neck profile. The two USA made Codas I have played had chunky necks, not at all like a modern jazz type profile......maybe I didn't play a skinnier neck option if it exists? I like the active Spector tone, however.....if I was looking for a jazzy type Spector, I think I would want to be able to cop the "jazz tone" That being said.........Lindy Fralin's shop is here in Richmond.......I'm sure I could adapt one to my tonal preference.......LOL. Still interested in trying one out though!

IM with you JAmie.. I have been waiting for the PRO to come out and agree about FRALINs Awesome pik ups there for sure..:bassist:

Cool. The CK's have more flexibility compared to other strings of the same tension I think. The 136 sets were a definite departure in feel from the DR's I was using. On the left hand they're great. I'm hoping the 142 set gets me closer on the right hand stuff without losing some of the expressiveness I get with the left hand.

That should put you where you want to be. Have you restrung the 6 yet?

Yeah, but I put a 136 set on there since I had one still around. I actually bought a BEAD 142 set from CK a while back I had planned to use on the 34" Kramer, so today I placed an order for a few things including a .043 G string to add to that set. I will try it on my existing 5XL and see how it feels. Right now the 6XL is more of a "finesse" bass. :)

There have been a few members who have expressed some interest in the spectorcore models (I'm curious myself, actually), but I'm not sure if anyone who's been posting in these threads regularly has one- sorry I can't be of more help to you, I think if you stick around someone who has some experience with them should be able to comment

I just got one today and only have about an hour play time on it so take that for what it's worth...

The neck is not a 1.5" like a Jazz...it measures to about 1.6" or so. I'd say a C shape and very thin. The piezo by itself, IMO, doesn't pull off the acoustic plugged in type sound. Blended with mag pickup (a single coil HZ in this case) it sounds very good. It cops a pretty decent P bass tone and blended right with the piezo, yes, can get a decent "acoustic"-esque tone. By itself, to my ears, the piezo sounds too harsh even with the tone rolled down on it.

Like I said, I don't have much time on it so more to come...

WooHoo! :bassist: :D Too bad you don't have a live vid of you playing that...do you? PLZ?!?! :D I'd love to hear your Spector bass tearing thru the mix with that song!:bassist::bassist::bassist:

I will check next Sunday to see if they recorded the service, the song sounded better with the organ part...Bob always try's to cover what's needed but we all know the organ is what was used to record this tune!

I got a secret purchase made and I'm hoping to use it this Sunday.....that's if ups gets it to me on time!

Huh...my USA Coda 5XL has the thinnest neck of all the 5 string Spectors I've played. I'd compare it to the Ian Hill that I had. It's a really fast player. :bassist:

I've had one for a while but haven't played it much, totally agree about the neck, very thin, similar to the legend4 I had, Ice's old bass, what strings are you using, I tried d'addario half rounds, made it really thumpy sounding, not sharp at all

Ok.....I have an ian hill and I would not call the neck skinny compared to my new fender american jazz deluxe I got for a vlues project.....hiding.....lol. maybe it was just the two four strings I played? I had a mtd once that had a skinny front to back neck....I'm not talking side to side skinny I'm talking front of finger board to back middle of neck skinny...lol

Fender jazz necks have a better profile than the Coda 4 that I had a chance to play. My rebop has a better profile than the Coda 4 I played also. The 5's might be different than the 4's but I did not like the chunky profile.
