For me it's a choice between black (which was my first inclination) and chrome. Not that gold isn't good too, but the vast majority of USA Spectors have gold hardware and I want this one to be different.

Ultimately I'm going to make the same proclamation I give ANY bassist who asks me "I'm thinking about getting this bass (insert brand) and a Spector... what do you think?"

My answer is ALWAYS... play them both and decide for yourself. You're the bassist. You have to love the tone, the feel and that bass has to MAKE you want to pick it up.

Loving music and have the desire to play music isn't brand-specific. It's something inside of you.

So. Back to the question at hand... this color hardware or this other color hardware?

Both bridges are solid premium brass. One has a black enamel-baked powder coat. The other is electroplated in chrome. BOTH sound the same and function the same.

So this is purely a case of aesthetics. Not tone or playability.

It doesn't matter what ANY ONE ELSE'S personal preference is.

WE ALL KNOW what you're about to spend $$$ wise to order this bass. So NO OTHER opinion should matter.

You're going to wait 6 months or so to get this bass... and then what? If you don't like the hardware you've ordered on it you can always exchange it out...

But I say order what makes YOUR heart skip a beat.

Order what YOU think looks better.

It's going to be your bass. So YOU and YOU alone have to love it.

No offense to anyone here. But I've never given a second thought to what any of you would think when I've ordered a bass from Stuart. I KNOW what I want because I've spent time thinking about it.

And I'm NEVER, EVER, EVER disappointed with my choice.

The best way to get buyer's remorse is let the opinion of someone else pollute your thinking and contaminate your mind.

If this is purely a fun exercise just to see what people like. Then on with the games.

But if this is truly an influencing/contributing factor to your choice. Stop. And think about what YOU want.

That's the only opinion that matters here.

Found a Rex 5 on ebay for what seems to be a decent price. Has the inlay stickers and the BCQ pre which I'll probably swap out for a tonepump at some point as I really prefer the 2EQ over 3 band.

Can anyone (maybe Ice specifically) speak for how aggressive sounding the Coda 5DLX will be with the OBP-2 pre? I really think I'll love both basses but really can't afford getting both right now. I've always wanted a Rex 5, I just don't know how much I'll really like the body shape. The price I can get on the Coda seems to be a solid deal also, so I think I'm gonna jump on it and save on the boarder fees considering it's a USA made bass.

Really Patrick this was just a fun experiment. People like to be asked their opinion and be heard. I had fun playing with Photoshop. I created the images to help me decide. I just chose to share with the club and have a fun vote.

The fact is that after that last pic I put together of the basses in Stuart's office I could plainly see that my original inclination of black is what I'm going to choose. Even though the person who's opinion I regard the most, Todd, suggested gold, I'm going with the "look" that moves me.

I am in no way "farming out" this decision. I already knew I wanted the ultraviolet stain, ebony FB, shaved neck, etc... The only choice I wavered on was the hardware. So I created some PS images to help me decide and in turn thought I'd throw them out just to see what the guys thought and have a little fun. I know you're just trying to help. It's cool.

I think it can be good to ask opinions if it gets you info you haven't previously considered.

I was originally going to do ebony on my NS-6XL but after talking it over with PJ I decided to go pau ferro. He didn't try to dissuade me - just gave me an opinion and I used that to make my decision.

That UV bass is going to look awesome no matter what - I think we were just nitpicking the level of awesome.

I'm in with NBD.... Ice is an awesome guy to do a trade with... I plugged her in for a minute and it sounds great... no offense to Ice but I gotta get some new strings on it. But he sent some strings specifically to do that! awesome looking bass, its comfy and plays nice....

yup, he also sent a set of Spector Nickels, which are a big improvement for me. the flats feel cool, but not the tone in my head

I will be trying to copy this pic when my NS2A gets here... This will be the most Spectors I've owned at one time.

Thought I'd pass along where we stand on the issue of what color hardware we all think looks best with the new color UltraViolet combined with an ebony fingerboard.
There have been 23 responses to the question...

Black - 10
Chrome - 8
Gold - 5

Those of you who gave more than one answer I only entered your #1 choice. I want to thank everyone who responded and let you know I really appreciate your input here. Looks like I need to make up my mind soon if I want a chance to get this bass before the end of the year.

I've put together one last pic, this time showing the same bass in a more standard setting (Stuart's Office). The Photoshop work is not as good but you get the idea. I'm only showing the black and chrome. Feel free to give further opinions.
