Hey y'all, happy new year!

I'm helping a friend out who is looking to upgrade his Spector Dimension 5 preamp and pickups to something more suitable to his bands music, which is old school thrash like Exodus. He's been researching and is thinking a Haz clone with EMG DC40's.

I know a bunch of you have tested just about everything and I'm curious your thoughts on what the best pre/pups combo would be.

Also, Sheldon told me he's not building any clones for a bit and recommended the LHZ version. Curious if anyone has any input on those. Obviously they will fit well in the bass compartment, but how is the quality/tone relative to a HAZ and SNC?

Thanks!
Tony
The LHZ clone's are great, just installed one in my NS-2A. I am selling a set of EMG 40P5 & 40DC if he's interested…

I'm afraid I probably don't qualify as being an objective voice on Haz clones after taking the LHZ to market this year. That said, I can point you to a few links for research:
  • LHZ sound samples: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed]
  • LHZ feedback from clients: [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] (Toward bottom of page)
  • Talkbass user @fibz maintains what I have come to think of as "THE reference library" of gear and tone here: firebrain
Ultimately most Haz clones will deliver the same vintage HazLabs tone.. It's not a trade secret: we are all copying the same circuit!

Regarding the a Haz with EMG DC40's... that is a tone with BITE! We have a few clients running that config for heavier genres.

Happy New Year!

Does he have the Fishman or HP Dimension?

Thanks @AgingEngineer for mentioning. I think between the SNC and LHZ is no big difference. As mentioned before both are true clones. The LHZ is pretty much the only option right now. But pretty awesome one. Also check out the NS CR5 playlist, where EMG DCs are paired with the LHZ.

Man, that's beautiful, looks like water at night. is that a Wal to its left?

It's on Octave Basses Wal clone :D. Real Wals are nearly impossible to get, so this is the closest I can get for the time being lol. Custom made multi-coil pickups, and a custom made filter based pre-amp with the exact frequency range of a real Wal, complete with the Q-boost for each pup and the pick attack, with the internal trim pots. By far the closest I've ever gotten to a Wal sound without a real one!

I've actually heard of that builder! only heard good things about them. The guy that told me about them said to keep hush about it, seems the secrets out now :roflmao:.

I agree. The LHZ is an awesome preamp and it's very close to the SNC and the original Haz. Differences you hear are probably attributable to other factors: strings, pickup configuration, pickup height, setup, and the old "tone in your fingers".

That said, I typically like the 40P5 better than the 40DC in the neck position, as it gives you a more mid-forward tone that to my ears sits better in the mix. As an experiment, when I put the LHZ in my new (to me) Skyler Acord last week, I stuck a pair of 40DCs in it as I had them lying around and the 40P5 I ordered has been in USPS limbo for the past week. While I can dial in one good tone with it, anything else I do seems really scooped. Maybe you're into that kind of sound. It's not for me. I am very much a 40P5/almost anything kind of guy.

I think we all hear things differently. D'addario to me is irritatingly bright, and I've generically disliked them on everything I've tried them on except one guitar that sounds perfect with them. That same guitar sounds kinda muddy if I put EBs on it and works better with the brighter/thinner sound of EXLs.

EB is kinda my generic standard. I like them for the mids, but I also think it's because I've been using them for so long my ear is just attuned to the sound of them.

That said, I find that since switching to an active bass I'm not quite as picky about strings. EQ gives me more freedom to adjust.

I hadn't tried a set of EB Bass Slinkys in better than 20 years. And to be honest, my recollection was that they sounded similar to D'Addario XLs.

I don't know if there's been changes over all of these years at Ernie Ball and D'Addario, but IMO Slinkys are now very bright sounding, and have a much longer lifespan than I remember them having. Or, quite possibly my body chemistry has changed, I'm not sure.

Way back in the day, D'Addario XLs were my starting point with a new bass.

I now have XLs on my NS6. They don't sound as bright to my ears as the EBs did, and they feel slightly stiffer.

I'm going to put some serious miles on them, and see how they pan out.

But I still envision that I'll be putting GHS Bass Boomers on my NS6. They have a much "darker" tone, which for me works really well with my Alembics, Spectors, and my Fender-inspired basses that have EMGs.

I love active EMGs, but I do find them to be "unforgiving", and my somewhat aggressive plucking hand produces some harsh sounding "clanks" that are quite a challenge for me to eq out.

Heck, who knows. Maybe I'll try a set of GHS Pressurewounds on my NS6.

I've noticed that EB Slinkies are very bright. They're probably, IMO, the brightest and best sounding nickels on the market. I'm more of a SS guy (Normally DR High Beams or Lo Riders) because I like how they retain their brightness longer but if I use nickels, I get Slinkies these days. They also seem to take longer to "mellow" than other nickels I've used. The brighter the better for me. I can tame brightness way easier than trying to manufacture it if the strings are a little older.

This entire hour long video is great if you're an Alice in Chains fan, but at 23:50 Tabitha Soren from MTV News talks to Mike Starr about his Kramer Spector basses. Says they're expensive at $2,500 "...but you can talk them down to $1,800." :roflmao:

As a massive AIC & Mike Starr fan, this video is golden! Thanks for sharing. "Mike: Hey Randy, how much did we get this one [his new blue NS-2] for? Randy: $1750." :D

So... as I'm considering my first 5 string, I notice Spector has two different pickup spacings. Can anyone tell me why and what effect they have?

It seems most of the higher end have a narrow spacing, and the wide spacing seems mostly on the lower end imports?

As promised, I have re-recorded the two samples I used for my original Spector tone test on my NS2 with a Haz, and uploaded them to the original DropBox link found here. Like the originals, they were recorded completely and totally raw. No effects, no cabs, sims, or IRs, just pure DI. I tried my best to equalize gain and volume as much as possible, but it could be a little off since the gain settings on my amp have changed since, and I didn't think to commit to memory what it was when I did the original test, as I didn't expect to eventually be adding to it.

To my ears, the Haz makes a huge difference, and you can really hear the classic Spector growl.

Let me know what you all think!
