this appears to be a Korean made NS-2A from the late 1980s
that has been modified with gold hardware, USA style inlays,
diff knobs, EMG pickups, etc.

yes that appears to be an upgraded circuit in there, our USA 9v circuit.

NS 1119, yes that would be the serial number for that model.
this bass was made in approx. late 1987/early 1988 when new.

when new these basses had a list price of 899.00. I am not sure
what they are selling for used these days, you can Google and also
check ebay completed listings. then factor in the upgrades and the
wear on the bass....

I am always impressed how fast PJ is at getting back to people.

NS-2A's have been going for $350 to $600 depending on the wear and upgrades.
I purchased a NS-2A in May for $500 which had a 18V EMG upgrade. Other recent sales on ebay have been between $400-$500. That one has the inlays which is a nice upgrade but it does have some wear and the pickup mod, correct?

I just went back too read your original description. If it is a re-finish job and has alot of dents and dings I would go even lower. I wouldnt go more then $300. Most important, how is the playability? neck, frets and is the trussrod functioning?

You bet. I actually have the bass with me, and I COULD take a bunch of better photos, but first, I need to get these rusty, filthy old strings off it, clean and polish all the brass, and do a general cleaning.

Lucky that I have an extra case, stand, & strap lying around, too! Kismet!

I'd halt the cleaning until you know if you're really going to buy it, now that you know it's not a US made. $600.00 would be too much! :scowl:

Oh bummer!!! Price goes down now...I'd offer $150.00 in that condition. You can buy better from GC @$349.00.

Seems like someone put an awful lot of work to make it look like an NS-2....hardware, pickups, brass nut, inlays, preamp. And the NS-2A bridge was smaller than the US so they either had to gold plate the stock one or route out the body for the US bridge.
Although I heard they did a few NS-2A's for artists that came with inlays, etc.

Man we're pushing the post count on this thread!!

Y'know.. I WOULD wait on the detailing... but as sick as it sounds, I LIKE taking a nasty, neglected bass and really digging into it, cleaning it, setting it up right, making it as new as I can. I need help. Or a different job.

Hopefully, the owner will agree about the value. He's not really knowledgable about this (of course, neither was I until an hour ago), so all he knows is what the original owner told him: That it was worth 2k. I'm printing out all these messages to show him that I've done some homework. If I can convince him that this is a $300 bass, then it will be MY $300 bass tonight.

Just curious, 2 questions about the bridge.
Does it say Spector on it?
If you tap it does it feel heavy and solid or kinda light?

(asking because, the NS-2A original bridges are heavy and say Spector on them. But they can be replaced with a light alloy bridge from the current line of Korean Spectors and it dosent say Spector on it. Also, do the tuners say Schaller? Or do they have no name?

The bridge does have the Spector logo debossed into it, and it's a heavy 'un. PJ Rubal says it's an upgrade. And yes, the machines DO have the Schaller logo on them. Apparently the original owner invested almost as much into upgrading an NS-2A as he would have spent on an NS-2!

That's not a US bridge so maybe this was a custom. It seems the US bridge are slightly wider than the J pickup and this is narrower like the NS-2A's.

Interesting bass.

I bought some from a guy off of E Bay, put them on my BC Rich.They didn't hold up very well! Cleaned the fretboard with alchohol as directed etc..But they only look cool, especially with roudwound strings! They'll peel right off & be haning on your strings or stuck to the stage..I.M.O. :hmm:
