Spector Legend Series

I saw one in the local shop here and thought it looked too pretty to just pass by so I picked it up and demo'd it for about 30 minutes. She played pretty nice. I ran it through the same type of amp I have here at home and in the store, it didnt sound bad either. Got a good amount of bottom end, but was a bit bright for my liking. But I can over look that. Im trying to decide if theyre worth the $750 price tag or if Id be better off holding out.

Just curious to know what others here think about them is all.

I bought a Spector Legend 5 as an introduction to the world of 5 strings. I like the string spacing, and the neck profile, and the 24 frets is nice, even if you can't really reach past the 22nd. I find the 3 band preamp pretty usable, I enjoy most of the tones I can get. A couple things I dislike about this bass is to me, it is low output. Maybe it is because of the basswood body, but this can be fixed by just turning up the volume. The other thing is that the stupid knobs won't stay on their pots, no matter how I put them on. One falls off weekly if I'm using it a lot...

Other then those two things, I really like my Spector. I don't see myself getting rid of it too soon, unless a great deal comes up that I just can't pass up.

Yeah man, I got mine for $500 (although it was actually worth $600 new, but someone messed up my special order. I'm not complaining), and love it. But it's my first step up bass. Even still, I think it does pretty well. Although yes, it can sound a bit hi-fi. I think the P-pick ups sound alittle thin. Not as thumpy as I sometimes would like.

Nevertheless, a good bass, although probably not for that price. Might wanna ask what's with that.

A Spector Legend is certainly not worth $750

At $450, however, they are a pretty decent bass. I had one and liked it, but the tone was a bit "hi-fi" for me.

Well, it depends on which Legend model is being referenced (page down within this link):

The Perfect Bass

The 699.00 Legend Custom still beats his price by a bit, but perhaps this is the model he was playing, as opposed to the 499.00 (or 450.00) Spector Legend Classic.

. It just couldn't fill the boots of the beautiful Euro Spectors I have played.

Thats what Im wondering. Looks wise they arent all that much different, other than the headstock. Cant remember if the bodies are slightly different. Im having a hell of a time finding a Euro Spector to compare the tone too, is there that much of a difference in tone between the 2? Since it was mentioned in this thread, Id also like to hear more reviews on the Rebop.

I think the one I played in the shop was a custom but in the cherry burst color and had a set neck.

I see what you mean about it being clanky.

Thats kinda, but not exactly what I meant about too bright for my liking. Its tone was so bright that I was wondering if it could easily become clanky. I was hoping I might be able to tame that, but I dont know, Ive never used one in a jam session and you know as well as I do in that environment, its totally different than trying it out in the store.

JMHO, but I think there are much better choices in the same price range as the Legends. I think the "clank" is pretty much untamable, at least it was on the one I had. It was a very nice looking bass, and the construction wasn't bad at all, but short of getting new pickups and preamp, I found it pretty much unusuable.

Im still shopping around. Nothings quite etched in stone just yet.

Id like to know a bit more about the ReBops too. They dont have them at the shop I was at. What I do know is they are bolt on necks. Spectors are naturally punchy already, so I'm wondering how much more punchy the thing will be due to the bolt on neck. I dont know why, but Im thinking that might be a clanky sound as well. Cant play one to find out for sure. I like punch, but not excessive.

Obviously it's a different level instrument from a Legend, but I also owned a NS5CRFM (Czech made 5 string neck through....this model preceded the Euro), and I found it to be a VERY bright instrument, but it DIDN'T sound clanky like the Legend. You may want to give the Rebop a try if you can find one around.

I was played the legend again today, I asked the shop owner if hed mind playing some stuff on the guitar so that I could get something of an idea of what it might sound like in a jam situation.

Eh, Im still not sure of what to make of the bass. I think it sounds pretty good, but needs a bit more "umph." Maybe it was me, but I thought it was lacking pressence. Im not sure of exactly what to make of the neck. Its not a chore to play, but Im used to Fender Jazz bass and Ibanez SR506 necks.

They carry the Rebops, but none are currently in stock, so they're waiting for one to come in. Once it comes in, I plan on taking it for a test drive.

what do you mean by watch out? will they crap out on me, a tonality issue, both??
